Marquess Alexis Leon Midford (アレクシス・レオン・ミッドフォード, Arekushisu Reon Middofōdo), a distinguished knight and the head of the Midford house and the Order of the Garter, is the husband of Francis and the father of Edward and Elizabeth.

Appearance

Alexis is a middle-aged man with thick eyebrows, a mustache, a cleft chin, and slicked-back flaxen hair. He often wears formal, sophisticated clothing.

Personality

Alexis is a warm, affable individual, who, unlike his wife, is disposed to openly show affection.

As the Head of the Order of the Garter, Alexis is a valiant leader and fighter who honors the the code of chivalry and who is resolved to protect the defenseless, as demonstrated when he guarded the other passengers on the Campania from Bizarre Dolls.

History

Alexis attended Weston College with his future brother-in-law Vincent Phantomhive. He was the prefect of Green Lion's Fag.

Alexis eventually became the distinguished head knight of England. In a fencing event held by Queen Victoria, he was defeated by Francis and subsequently married her. They went to have two children together: Edward and Elizabeth.

Years later in March 1889, Alexis and Francis attended Ciel's decoration as the Earl of Phantomhive; the former took part in the ceremony.

Plot

Luxury Liner Arc

Alexis' real feelings towards Ciel.

Alexis, Francis, Edward, and Elizabeth plan to travel to New York on the luxury passenger ship Campania for three weeks from April 17, 1889. Alexis has Elizabeth invite Ciel Phantomhive on their family trip.

On April 17, Alexis, Francis, Edward, and Elizabeth board the first-class passenger deck of the Campania, where they encounter Ciel and his servants, Sebastian Michaelis, and Snake. Alexis stares at Ciel with great intensity, before affectionately hugging him. Afterward, he, his family, and Ciel eat together on the ship.

Three days later, the Bizarre Doll invasion begins. Alexis and Edward rush to the elevator hall, where Francis and Sebastian, who have been battling a horde of Bizarre Dolls, are. When Edward asks Sebastian where Elizabeth is, Sebastian says that Elizabeth is with Ciel, to Alexis's and Francis's relief, for they are certain that Ciel will protect her at all costs. When Sebastian offers to escort them to some place safe, they refuse to go; Alexis declares that the Midfords have guarded England for generations and that, as knights, they would never abandon their people; Edward adds that, as English knights, they protect the weak. Both Alexis and Edward, then, turn to Francis for her approval, which she gives.

The Midfords protect the passengers.

Alexis, Francis, and Edward prepare to fight the Bizarre Dolls, while Sebastian is about to leave. Suddenly, the ship violently shakes, shocking them. After running to the first-class deck, they discover that the ship has crashed into an iceberg and Sebastian dashes to the wheelhouse.

Later, Alexis, Francis, and Edward arrive at the first-class lounge; they encourage the passengers there to persevere and kill the hostile Bizarre Dolls, thereby saving the passengers. Alexis promises to protect them and commands the unharmed to assist in lowering the lifeboats. Edward urges them to hurry. When a passenger asks Alexis who he is, Alexis introduces himself as the Marquess of Midford and leader of the British knights.

Afterward, Alexis, Francis, and Edward head to the first class deck, where Edward helps direct the passengers into lifeboats and Ciel returns Elizabeth to him. The Midfords are in lifeboats, by the time the ship heavily tilts and breaks in two. A rescue ships comes at dawn, and the Midfords return to London.

Public School Arc

Alexis attends the pre-tournament festivities at Weston College with his wife and daughter. As his family, Ciel, and McMillan converse, he tells the story of "Miracle of Sapphires," the first time Sapphire Owl dormitory won the annual cricket tournament. He was Green Lion's prefect's fag at the time. Their house lost to Sapphire Owl and their leader, Vincent Phantomhive. After the story, he encourages Ciel to work hard and bring victory to his house once again.

The next day, Alexis watches the cricket tournament with Francis. When Green Lion beats Violet Wolf, Alexis is ecstatic about the prospect of a second "Miracle of Sapphires"; Sapphire Owl won against Scarlet Fox which means, like back then, Blue and Green House would compete in the finale again. And, indeed: Like his father, Ciel manages to lead Sapphire Owl to victory and achieve another "Miracle of Sapphires." Alexis claps proudly when the winner is announced.

Later, Alexis cries upon seeing his nephew in his cox uniform for the victory parade. Francis wipes away his tears with a handkerchief. When Blue House's cricket team loses balance and falls into the river not long afterward, Alexis laughs alongside most other spectators.

During the subsequent party, Alexis happily encourages Francis to dance with Tanaka.

Blue Cult Arc

One evening, while Alexis is eating dinner with Francis, Edward approaches them, questioning them about Elizabeth's whereabouts. Francis informs him that Elizabeth, having received a dinner invitation from a friend, left with Paula. The same event occurs the following week.

Blue Memory Arc

Months later in November, Alexis and Edward arrive at Phantomhive Manor alongside Fred Abberline and various other Scotland Yard officers because they received an anonymous message that the mastermind behind the Sphere Music Hall murders, Blavat Sky, and his accomplices are hiding there. Upon their arrival, Alexis and the others are not immediately confronted with Blavat—instead, they learn about "Ciel"'s survival and Ciel's deceit over the last years. Elizabeth then emerges from the manor's upper floors to confirm Ciel's lies.

Alexis is overwhelmed with the situation and the unsettling truth he found out and asks for a thorough explanation. However, Ciel is too upset to give one and before anyone can inquire further on it, a Scotland Yard officer arrives and announces that he discovered bottles containing blood in the manor's basement. At the same time, his colleagues bring a detained Blavat to the entrance hall. Shocked, Alexis has to experience how Blavat identifies Ciel as "Lord Sirius" and Ciel is arrested together with Sebastian and Blavat.

Following the arrest, Alexis asks "Ciel" whether he could explain everything to him and requests Elizabeth to please return home as they are worried about her. Both agree, and Alexis sends off Elizabeth with Edward before he is led to the drawing room by Tanaka.

Blue Revenge Arc

Later, Alexis and Francis are briefed by "Ciel" about everything that happened from the day Phantomhive Manor was attacked until today. Alexis chooses to believe "Ciel"'s story and then leaves with Francis.

Etymology

• "Alexis" comes from the Greek name Ἄλεξις (Alexis) meaning "helper" or "defender." It is derived from the Greek ἀλέξω (alexo, "to defend, to help").

• "Leon" comes from the Greek λέων (leon) meaning "lion".

• "Midford" comes from the place name Mitford in Northumberland and means "ford at the junction of two rivers." These two rivers are the River Font and the River Wansbeck.

Out of Universe

• According to the official YenPress translation of the manga series, Alexis is the Head of the Order of the British Empire despite said order having been founded in 1917. In the Japanese original, however, Alexis is simply the Head of the "British Knights" (英国騎士団, eikoku kishidan). Here, the term seemingly refers to the Order of the Garter, which was founded in 1348.
