Fred Aberline (フレッドアバーライン, Fureddo Abārain) is a police officer in the Scotland Yard. He is frequently partnered with his superior, the commissioner Arthur Randall.

AppearanceEdit

Fred has shaggy, auburn hair, a mustache, and blue eyes. As a police officer, he dresses in a way fitting his role; his typical attire consists of a suit, a green tie, a dark-gray trench coat, and a bowler hat.

PersonalityEdit

Fred is a curious, compliant, and relatively naive individual. Often times, he directs his inquisitions to his superior, Arthur Randall, with hopes of having him elucidate certain matters; for instance, he has asked Arthur to explain the purpose of the Phantomhive family.^[1] He is subservient to Arthur, and is subjected to his insults, as well as the reproach that may arise, such as when investigations are not carried out quickly enough. Typically, he responds to these condemnations with meek apologies.^[2] However, Fred, in alignment to his position as a police officer, believes in justice and righteousness; thus, he was appalled by Ciel Phantomhive's irregular and dishonorable arrangement with Queen Victoria.^[3]

Additionally, Fred harbors a vast appreciation for the arts, and is considerably knowledgeable of various paintings. He is impressed by Ciel's collection of Brotherhood Pre-Raphaelite artwork, something he is a fan of.^[4]

HistoryEdit

When young, Fred lost his family. As a result, he was left to fend for himself, by any means necessary. Before becoming a police officer, he unloaded cargo ships.^[5] Exclusive to the anime only, Fred got engaged with his girlfriend Maria when he learned of her pregnancy. Thereafter, he was determined to create a better world for his fiancée and unborn child.^{[citation needed]}

Manga's SynopsisEdit

Curry Contest ArcEdit

Anglo-Indians are attacked for the 20th time, and Arthur Randall chides Fred for his failure to apprehend the culprit. Suddenly, Ciel Phantomhive and his butler approach them, and Fred regards them hostilely but is stopped by Arthur. Ciel snatches the documents of the case from Fred's hands, and returns them before he departs.^[6] Fred asks about the obscure nature of the Phantomhive family, and Arthur explains to him that it is a secret executive agency under Queen Victoria that resorts to any method to dissociate the Royal Family's involvement in crimes. Fred comments that the Phantomhives are, in essence, the opposite of Scotland Yard since they use evil powers to accomplish the wishes of Queen Victoria.^[7]

After the completion of the case, Fred and Arthur visit Ciel's manor.^[8] They sit down in the dining room for dinner, and Arthur hands Ciel the bribe money from the Queen because of his work as her Watchdog, much to Fred's alarm. They celebrate the closing of the Anglo-Indian case with champagne, despite the official capture of the culprit; Arthur tells Fred that since the Queen and Ciel declare that the case is over, it will be deemed as such, with no arguments.^[9]

Shard of Hope Arc

As lead investigator on the case, he is determined to reacquire the ring, as it is important evidence in a string of kidnappings. At the Frost Fair, which is held on the frozen river, he goes to Undertaker to gather more information, and Undertaker leads them to the ring, which has been incorporated into an ice statue. However, when he tries to remove it, he is stopped by a panel of judges, who state that it is the main prize in the upcoming sculpture competition.

As a result, he is forced to enter, but is not scored well, much like the other entrants - Lau and the original thieves of the ring. When it is clear that Sebastian will win, the thieves threaten to bomb the place, forcing him to flee to the side of the river. When the thieves throw the dynamite, they break the ice and fall into the river. Despite them threatening unarmed townspeople, he saves them by pulling them out of the river.

Conspiracy and Revenge Arc

When John Stanley's body is found in the river, he goes to work gathering more information. However, Ash ends up sending the Scotland Yard after Ciel and Lau for distributing large quantities of Lady Blanc opium. Fred attempts to take Ciel in, but ultimately Randall makes the arrest, after making it clear that resisting arrest will only cause Ciel to lose his title as a noble.

While Ciel is in custody, Fred looks after him, bringing him tea and chatting, where he comments that he does not believe Ciel was actually responsible for the drug stores found in his company's warehouse. When Ciel tries to escape, Fred accompanies him, saying Ciel needs an ally.

While walking the streets, a shop keeper approaches Fred and Ciel, stating that the child who found Stanley's body had been found. They go to question him, and are directed to another source, who reveals that Lau actually murdered Stanley, despite his former claim to not know him. When they are attacked by armed gunmen, Sebastian goes to their aid and takes them out. Ciel decides to go after Lau, and tells Fred not to approach him again.

However, he chases the boat where Lau and Ran-Mao are at, and intervenes, preventing Lau from killing Ciel. While dying, he tells Ciel that he has a future and to go for it. After spending time with Fred, Ciel had gained a greater respect for him, and seems extremely upset over his death, blaming it on Sebastian's inaction.

TriviaEdit

Fred is based on real-life police officer Frederick Abberline, who also worked on investigating the Jack the Ripper murders.^[10]

Fred's appearance in the anime is slightly different from the manga, as in the anime, he does not have a mustache.

Exclusively in Kuroshitsuji II, Fred has a twin brother. Strangely, he has said he does not have any siblings.^{[citation needed]}
