Human (人間, Ningen) is a living being incapable of possessing supernatural abilities. However, a human is able to form a Faustian contract with a demon.

Overview[]

Humans are a living species with ordinary attributes and no supernatural skills. An exception to this case is Finnian, who received superhuman strength during his time as a human test subject.[1][2]

When a human is intended to die, a Grim Reaper would review the individual's life by judging their Cinematic Record, which is the recollection of the human's memory. The Grim Reaper then decides whether or not to let the human continue living or to let them die. The first option is rarely executed unless the person's life is or would be beneficial to the world. The Grim Reaper collects their soul after the human dies.[3] Grim Reapers can conceal themselves to be invisible to humans. However, humans who are close to death can see Grim Reapers even if they have concealed themselves as Grim Reapers are "death itself."[4] Furthermore, humans who commit suicide are punished by becoming Grim Reapers.[5]

Humans are able to form a Faustian contract with a demon, in order to have their wish fulfilled; so far, the only known contracted human is Ciel Phantomhive. Once the contract forms, the human would bear a mark on their person, but the location of the mark may vary from human to human. In a sense, the contract is a "scar" the demon leaves so they would not lose the person they contracted with.[6]

For the duration of the contract, the usual practice is for the demon to serve under the human for as long as it takes. Once the contract is completed, that is the human's wish is fulfilled by their demon, the human's soul is eaten by the demon as compensation.[7] As contracted humans have signed their life away to a demon, they already have "one foot in the coffin" and, thus, can see concealed Grim Reapers as well.[4]

Trivia[]

  • It is possible that there are humans with the innate ability to see concealed Grim Reapers; the members of the Phantomhive family may be some of them.[4]

  • The second season of the anime introduces two more contracted humans: Alois Trancy and Luka Macken.
