Paula (ポーラ, Pōra) is a maid of the Midford household, and a dear friend of Elizabeth Midford.

Character Outline

Paula has pale skin, dark brown eyes, and long brown hair. She ordinarily wears a burgundy dress along with a white apron. In public, she often dons a brown coat, a black hat, and gloves.

Paula is a cheerful and optimistic individual. She works hard to keep Elizabeth Midford happy and is extremely loyal to her.

History

Paula manga

Elizabeth shows Paula her new shoes.

Paula informed Elizabeth Midford about the Phantomhives' deaths. Some time later, after Ciel returned, Elizabeth showed her new heeled shoes to Paula. Paula, while helping Elizabeth dress, noted that she has grown taller. Elizabeth became upset, prompting Paula to assure her that she is still very cute no matter her height. Nevertheless, Elizabeth refused to wear her new heeled shoes, opting instead for flats.[1]

Plot

Public School Arc

Paula accompanies the Midfords to the annual cricket tournament at Weston College and watches the tournament with Elizabeth Midford, the servants of the Phantomhive household, and McMillan.[2] Later, at the end of the tournament, Paula dances with Edward Midford.[3]

Blue Cult Arc

One day, Paula heads outside the Midford Manor, to where Edward Midford is practicing cricket. She notifies him that a visitor has arrived for Edward, which puzzles him since he was not told beforehand that a guest was coming.[4]

After Edward and Elizabeth Midford attended one of the Sphere Music Hall meetings together, Elizabeth becomes infatuated with them and takes Paula along with her to the music hall for the next few weeks.[5]

Ever since Elizabeth had Paula accompany her to Sphere Music Hall, Paula has been forced to work there. After Scotland Yard raids the music hall, they detain Paula and send a notice to the Midfords. Edward goes to get her, and, upon seeing her, asks her where Elizabeth is. An emotional Paula tells him that Elizabeth "has gone to where she belongs," and that she loves Elizabeth and cannot bear to see her cry anymore. Edward tries to comfort her, and says that they can resume their talk after they return to the manor.[6]

Shard of Hope Arc

With Ciel's birthday coming up, she accompanies Elizabeth to the Frost Fair, in an attempt to find him a good gift. She finds bells, which she finds cute, but Elizabeth dismisses them. Elizabeth ends up purchasing a Noah's Ark toy from a shady dealer, who tells the customers that it is an original from Ciel's Funtom Corporation, only three of which were made.

Paula bells

Paula rings her bells at Ciel's birthday party.

However, back at the Midford Manor, Elizabeth's father identifies it as a fake, causing her to break it in rage. Paula tries to cheer her up, but is dismissed. However, inside the ark, Elizabeth finds the Shard of Hope ring, which she decides will be Ciel's present.

The day before Ciel's birthday, Paula and Elizabeth go to the Phantomhive Manor. However, Elizabeth notes that the ring she broke earlier is fixed, takes the present back, and the two leave as quickly as they arrived. On their way back, they get stuck in traffic, and while Paula is looking out the window, Elizabeth takes off. Paula tries to find her, but cannot, so she calls the Phantomhive house and informs Sebastian Michaelis that Elizabeth is missing.

After Elizabeth has been found, on the morning of Ciel's birthday, Paula is seen celebrating his birthday with Elizabeth and the Phantomhive household, using her bells to bring cheer to them.

Conspiracy and Revenge Arc

After Ciel's revenge has been enacted, she is seen telling Elizabeth that the London fire has been put out, but that she has no news of the Phantomhive household. She makes Elizabeth a ring out of a dark blue flower in an attempt to cheer her up.
