Sebastian (セバスチャン, Sebasuchan) is the late pet dog of the Phantomhive household.
Character Outline[]
Sebastian is a large, black Borzoi, the Russian wolfhound. This particular breed is said to be rather quiet and silent, only barking very rarely. Sebastian is known to be a silent dog who only ever barks at Ciel Phantomhive.[1]
Borzois are also very athletic dogs; "Borzoi," coming from the archaic Russian adjective "Borzói" (борзый), even means "fast."
Furthermore, borzois are very smart but do not have strong territorial drives. Therefore, they do not make good watchdogs. Borzois are gentle, quite sensitive, and possess natural respect for humans.[2]
Sebastian wears a collar whose tag reads "S."[3]
History[]
When he was alive, Sebastian favored "Ciel" over Ciel Phantomhive as he would be seen nipping at the latter's ankles, scaring him.
On December 14, 1885, Sebastian was with the twins in their bedroom while they waited for Tanaka to come and pick them up.[4] At some point, Sebastian left the room, and Ciel later found him muzzled and locked up in another room.[3]
Upon finding Sebastian, Ciel declared not to be scared anymore and to find "Ciel" with Sebastian's help. However, when Ciel wanted to set out, Sebastian held him back, making him fall down. Then, Sebastian licked Ciel and guided him in the opposite direction.[5]
Sebastian went ahead to the chambers of Rachel and Vincent Phantomhive, Ciel not being able to keep up his pace. He barked when he was attacked in the anteroom. Sebastian was already dead when Ciel finally arrived in the room.[6]
Trivia[]
- Ciel Phantomhive named his demon butler, Sebastian Michaelis, after him.[7]
Etymology[]
- "Sebastian" comes from the Latin name "Sebastianus" meaning "from Sebaste"[8] or from the Greek name Σεβαστιανός (Sebastianos), "from Sebastia." "Sebaste/Sebastia" is the Latin/Greek name of Sivas, a town in Anatolia. The name is derived from the Greek word σεβαστός (sebastos, "venerable"), which comes from σέβας (sebas, "awe, reverence, dread") which, in turn, comes from the verb σέβομαι (sebomai, "feel awe, scruple").[9]
