Overview

"So alike were they... Two peas in a pod, one a mirror image of the other."
This article is about the demon butler of the Phantomhive household. You may be looking for the deceased pet dog of the Phantomhives.

I am simply one hell of a butler.
Sebastian Michaelis

Sebastian Michaelis (セバスチャン・ミカエリス, Sebasuchan Mikaerisu) is the demon butler of the Phantomhive household.

Appearance

Sebastian takes on the appearance of a tall, handsome adult with black hair, red eyes, and pale skin. He typically dresses in a butler's outfit, which consists of black trousers, a six-button double-breasted tailcoat, and a gray vest. He has the Phantomhive crest on his shirt cuffs and tie. Sebastian also sports white gloves, a pocket watch, and a chained silver lapel pin bearing the Phantomhive crest, traditionally worn by the house's head butler.[2]

Sebastian, notably, has black fingernails. The back of his left hand contains the mark of his Faustian contract with Ciel Phantomhive.[3]

Details of Sebastian's demonic form include high-heeled stiletto boots, sharp claws, glowing fuchsia irises, slit pupils, and longer, sharper teeth, with dark wings.[4][5]

Personality

Sebastian is a dedicated butler to Ciel Phantomhive and upholds a strong sense of duty to his master and household. He faithfully follows and carries out every one of Ciel's orders, while ensuring that the Phantomhive household runs smoothly. He does not sleep—for demons deem it as a form of luxury—and thus, he frequently performs tasks for Ciel at night.[6] One of his quirks is that he will always respond to Ciel's demands with the saying "Yes, my lord."

Sebastian predominantly appears as a courteous and impeccable servant. However, he is, in actuality, callous, heartless, and sadistic; he is ruthless when attacking others on Ciel's orders, and constantly puts Ciel in nonfatal danger for his own amusement.[7] Sebastian usually expresses his diabolic nature through his dark, sarcastic humor and inability to see good in anyone. He is known to not take instances in which Ciel is in danger seriously, such as kidnappings. However, he displays more concern when it's uncertain that he can save him, such as when Madam Red almost killed Ciel or when the Undertaker threatened his life.[8] He is often critical of his master and how he treats his workers,[9] but he has admitted that he does not dislike the butler lifestyle despite all the troubles he goes through on a daily basis.[10]

Sebastian views money as "rubbish" and "materialistic."[11] He is fluent in French and Latin, enough to teach the latter.[12][13] He is also proficient in Deutsch (German)[14] and East Franconian, a dialect in Southern Germany.[15] Sebastian has a great and mutual distaste for Grim Reapers.[16] Moreover, he profoundly adores cats and had kept at least thirteen hidden in his wardrobe to prevent Ciel from finding out.[17]

Sebastian often contemplates the behaviors and attitudes of human beings. He regards humans in general to be "difficult creatures," but he is fascinated with their struggles and lofty goals. He is intrigued by how seemingly insatiable they are, for they are willing to "drag others down to get what they want, even in death."[18]

History

Sebastian's real home is in an alternate world that is quite different from the human world. In particular, he mentioned that the creatures kept as pets there are in no way comparable to cats.[19] Sebastian had briefly remarked that he met an ancient Egyptian mummy when it was alive, identified as Smenkhkare who reigned about three thousand years ago.[20] He was also a guest at the Schönbrunn Palace from time to time.[21] He also claims to be responsible for the spread of the Black Death that occurred five hundred years prior.[22] In short, he muses that Ciel Phantomhive's life in comparison would feel like an instant.[23]

Sebastian stated that in the past, he engaged in "messily sampling every dish available," and he has since resorted to only consuming "high-quality" souls. As a result, he has been apparently starving, but he declared that the "dinner" will be much better the hungrier he is.[24]

Three years ago, he was summoned to Ciel Phantomhive when the latter was about to be sacrificed in an occult ritual.[25] After forming the contract with Ciel and placing the seal on his right eye, Ciel ordered him to slay his abductors. Sebastian decided to adopt a "role that is best fit to serve an Earl." Therefore, he assumed the form of a butler until Ciel completes his personal mission of revenge—that is the substance of their contract. In return, Sebastian will receive Ciel's soul. He was then given the name "Sebastian" by Ciel, which used to be his dog's name, for the duration of his duties as Ciel's butler.[26]

Once he finished annihilating the cultists, they went to the Royal London Hospital to meet with Ciel's aunt, Angelina Dalles. There, Tanaka gave him a watch that had been passed down from one Phantomhive butler to the next. After that, Angelina arranged for a carriage to bring them to the ruins of the Phantomhive Manor. While Ciel was mourning the deaths of his parents, Sebastian reconstructed the manor.[27]

Ciel and Sebastian then began daily life. He taught Ciel the fundamentals of being an earl; Ciel in turn taught him how a butler fit for the Phantomhive household should act. Sebastian also learned how to properly cope with Ciel's spoiled behavior; from time to time, he had to discipline Ciel.[28] He later attended Ciel's coronation as the Earl of Phantomhive, but he did not observe at a close distance because he saw himself as a mere butler, not family.[29] While they were walking, Sebastian asked Ciel if he was happy with how things were. Seeing Ciel's hesitation, he attempted to devour him. He stopped, however, when Ciel suddenly turned around and stated that he was determined to attain his revenge. He commanded Sebastian to be his sword and shield and bring him victory. Sebastian complied, as he was sure that Ciel's soul would be extremely delicious.[30]

Sometime during the same year, Sebastian was summoned to Ciel's room. Ciel complained of a wobbly tooth that was preventing him from eating his food properly. After examining it, Sebastian decided to forcibly take it out, much to Ciel's chagrin. Ciel attempted to protest against the idea, but Sebastian proceeded regardless, under the impression that he was doing his young master a favor. After the tooth removal, Ciel threw an angry fit at Sebastian. Ever since, he has been unwilling to allow Sebastian to check for cavities in his teeth when they start to wobble.[31]

Plot

Black Butler Arc

Sebastian, the butler of the Phantomhive household, wakes up his master Ciel Phantomhive and informs him about the day's schedule.[32] He then proceeds to prepare for the evening's special guest, Chlaus. The bumbling of the other servants almost causes catastrophe, but through Sebastian's quick thinking and even quicker reflexes, he is able to keep things running smoothly.[33]

The following day, Elizabeth Midford pays a visit, and Sebastian helps satisfy her wish to hold a ball by teaching Ciel how to dance.[34] After Elizabeth breaks Ciel's heirloom ring, Sebastian collects the pieces, fixes the ring, and returns it to him that evening.[35]

A few days after Chlaus's visit, Ciel is kidnapped by a drug dealer named Azzurro Vanel of the Ferro family. When Ciel refuses to supply the information Azzurro is seeking, the dealer orders his snipers to kill Ciel's servants. When a sniper misses hitting Sebastian, he is alerted of their presence. The snipers leave in a vehicle, but Sebastian stops them. After gathering information from them, he kills them by letting them fall off a cliff to their deaths. Furthermore, he informs Azzurro from a car phone that he intends to pick up Ciel.[36] Once he arrives, he is attacked, but he is able to calmly eliminate most of Azzurro's defense, mainly by using silverware as his weapons. Sebastian then enters the room where Ciel is being held and moves to provide the requested ransom. Hidden gunmen inflict what appears to be multiple fatal gunshot wounds on Sebastian, but Sebastian effortlessly recovers and returns the bullets by spitting them out of his mouth. He eliminates all of Ciel's kidnappers, refusing Azzurro's offer of leaving Ciel in exchange for women and money, and returns Ciel home.[37][38]

Sometime after the incident, Sebastian resumes and carries out his normal butler routine. He assigns Baldroy, Finnian, and Mey-Rin their daily tasks, and he then prepares breakfast and morning tea for Ciel. He wakes Ciel up and is told by him to accommodate the children he invited from Lord Barton's orphanage when they arrive the next day. Sebastian then begins preparations, but he is interrupted several times by the other servants to correct their mess. Soon irritated, he calms himself by briefly visiting a cat and then bakes many grandly decorated treats for the children, which leaves Baldroy, Finnian, and Mey-Rin awed. However, his minutely detailed chocolate model of an earl is missing a head. Sebastian and the servants assume Tanaka is at fault. He tells them to look for Tanaka while he gives Ciel his afternoon tea. In Ciel's study, Sebastian finds a sleeping Ciel, who turns out to be the culprit that stole the chocolate head to eat. He thinks to himself that being a butler is not too bad while scolding Ciel for snacking on the sly.[39]

Red Butler Arc

It is the social season, and Sebastian delivers Ciel Phantomhive numerous letters. Ciel has Sebastian toss away the purely social invites, but he stops when he finds a letter from Queen Victoria.[40]

Ciel decides to spend the social season at his manor in London[41] where he discovers his aunt Angelina Dalles, her butler, Grell Sutcliff, and family friend, Lau, looting his house in search of tea.[42] As Sebastian prepares some, they gather information on the murders performed by an unidentified serial killer, labeled Jack the Ripper by police and other prostitutes.[43] After meeting with Undertaker, they determine that the removal of the murdered women's wombs had to have been performed by an expert, meaning an individual with anatomical knowledge. [44]

Sebastian quickly makes a list of potential suspects and whittles it down to the Viscount of Druitt, Aleistor Chamber.[45] They decide to attend a party Aleistor is holding in disguise with Ciel dressing up as Angelina's niece and Sebastian pretending to be his tutor.[46] During the party, Sebastian creates a diversion by pretending to be a hired magician, allowing Ciel to investigate Aleistor. Shortly thereafter, Ciel is drugged and whisked off to a hidden room in the manor where Aleistor has begun to auction him off. Sebastian rescues Ciel and Aleistor is arrested. They both believe that the culprit of the murders is now safely behind bars.

However, another murder takes place, indicating that they have not yet found the real murderer. Sebastian and Ciel review the previous murders, and learn of the next likely victim. They lie in wait outside her home, sure that if the murderer comes, they would see him or her. However, the woman is killed anyway, and upon inspecting her home, they find Grell standing over her body. After Sebastian exchange words with Angelina and Grell, they eventually confess that they are Jack the Ripper.

Sebastian deals with Grell in his Grim Reaper form, whose modified death scythe is able to injure Sebastian. When Angelina moves in to attack Ciel, Sebastian momentarily returns to his demon form and moves to kill her. Ciel orders him to stop because Angelina had hesitated in her attack. Even though Sebastian stops, Grell kills Angelina when she refuses to kill

Ciel. Ciel then orders Sebastian to eliminate Grell. Sebastian manages to overpower Grell, and he moves in to kill him with Grell's own death scythe. However, just as he is about to deliver the finishing blow, William T. Spears appears and stops him. Sebastian apologizes for his failure to kill Grell, but Ciel dismisses him.

Indian Butler Arc

After the murders stopped, London faces another problem: British citizens who have recently returned from India are the victims of an attack that leaves them stripped and hanging upside-down outside Indian pubs. All victims have the same letter attached to their bodies; it states that England, the land of the devil, will soon receive punishment from heaven.[47] Ciel, Sebastian, and Lau begin their investigation and are attacked by some Indians in a poor district. [48] Soma Asman Kadar and Agni help them out and reveal that they are in town to find Soma's servant, Mina.[49]In return for their assistance, they come to stay at Ciel's manor, where Sebastian learns that Agni is on par with his fighting abilities despite being just human.[50][51]

Sebastian rescues Soma covertly by putting on a deer's head.

That night, Agni leaves the manor, and Lau, Ciel, Soma, and Sebastian follow him to Lord Harold West Jeb's home.[52] They discover that Agni is working for West, and he has knowledge of Mina's whereabouts.[53] Soma rushes in to confront Agni, but Agni only obeys West's orders and begins to attack Soma.[54] Sebastian bursts in to save Soma, albeit in disguise.[55]

Back at the manor, Soma starts throwing tantrums and destroys the Haviland tea set that Sebastian picked out for the young master.[56] He then asks if Lau and Ciel are all right, and Ciel decides that it would be best if he teaches Soma some manners. [57] Sebastian points out that Soma didn't have anything in the first place because everything he claims to possess had only been given to him.[58] As he continues to torment Soma with his words, Ciel enters the room and tells Soma that despite everything he has gone through, he plans to stand against everything to achieve his revenge. Ciel and Sebastian then leave the room to talk about West and his plans.[59] Soma follows them and apologizes to the two (although he hides behind Ciel as he apologizes to Sebastian).[60]

They continue their discussion about West's motives, and they speculate that West wants to win the upcoming curry competition in order to obtain a Royal Warrant.[61] The attacks, then, were done to terrorize any competitors into backing out.[62] Ciel decides he would like to obtain the warrant instead, and he orders Sebastian to make a competition-worthy curry.[63] Soma acts as a taste tester while Sebastian works on replicating the quality of Agni's curry.[64] After finally achieving it, Ciel says it's not enough to merely be on par with Agni; Sebastian needs to make him win.[65] Lau points out that Sebastian seems to have a plan and Sebastian confirms it.[66]

At the competition, it appears that Sebastian adds Funtom Co.'s chocolate which contains large amounts of pure cacao to achieve a deeper substance without ruining the taste and fragrance.[67][68] Agni commends Sebastian's use of chocolate as an ingredient, but he insists that he cannot lose.[69] On the other hand, Soma claims that Sebastian is ruining his curry by having the heat up too high and he is not able to make a perfect naan under the conditions provided.[70] When it is time to present their curries, Agni immediately wins favor while the judges mock Sebastian's curry doughnut.[71] However, once they taste it, they are evenly split over which curry is better and declare a tie due to the excellent combination of flavorings from the chocolate that Sebastian added.[72] Queen Victoria and John Brown arrive, though, and stop the judges. The queen then declares that Sebastian is the winner due to his curry's appeal to people of all ages.[73] Agni and Soma make up, and Agni apologizes to Sebastian for all the trouble he has given him.[74][75] He tells Sebastian that he and the prince have learned a lot from them and expresses his utmost gratitude. Sebastian tells him to raise his head for there is nothing to thank him for.[76] In the end, Agni tells him that he and the prince were able to make good friends, much to Sebastian's surprise. He tells Agni that it's the first time someone has said that to him.[77]

Circus Arc

Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian are sent out by Queen Victoria to investigate the disappearances of children that seem to coincide with the presence of the Noah's Ark Circus.[78] They attend a show, and Sebastian is invited onstage. However, Sebastian becomes too captivated with Betty the Tiger, who bites his head, causing Joker, Beast and the audience to panic .[79] After the show, Joker approaches him and takes him to see Doctor to ascertain his condition.[80] While there, he learns that many of the performers have prosthetic limbs, and he examines Beast's leg with interest.[81] Beast, however, accuses him of being perverse and Dagger attacks him to defend his "sister's" honor.[82] Due to his skill in evading the attacks, he impresses Joker and receives an invitation to join the circus.[83] Sebastian agrees and brings Ciel to take the entrance test the following day; Ciel is able to pass with Sebastian's assistance.[84] Joker then takes them on a tour of the tents and points out which ones are off-limits because they are exclusive to the first-string members.[85] Afterwards, Sebastian tells Ciel that the children are not present and suggests they inspect the first-string members' tents that are protected by Snake's poisonous snakes.[86] They work on assimilating with the rest of the members while waiting for an opportunity to investigate further. They are given stage names, with Sebastian's name being Black (ブラック, Burakku).[87] While in the practice tent, they discover that the Grim Reaper, William T. Spears, is also present, under the name Suit.[88] They agree to not interfere with each other; however, this is made more difficult by William's assignment as Sebastian's roommate. [89][90] William prevents Sebastian from investigating further while the circus members are sleeping because he has issues with Sebastian's nature of consuming souls.[91]

File:Sebastian after act.png

Sebastian smiles to the audience after finishing a trapeze act.

During a performance, Sebastian and Ciel are able to infiltrate the first-string members' tents which became possible because Sebastian tied up all the snakes.[92] However, when Wendy is injured, Sebastian is asked to stand in for her with Spears substituting for Peter. Ciel investigates further on his own, and he asks Sebastian to hurry back before the first-string members do in order to release the snakes.[93] During the act, William makes things more difficult by refusing to touch Sebastian; Sebastian then grabs his death scythe so they can finish the performance.[94][95] After the show, he is able to hurry back and release the poisonous snakes although he is fully aware that Ciel is still investigating.[96]

Ciel reveals the information he was able to gather, and asks Sebastian to investigate further.[97] However, Ciel is overcome by an asthma attack and collapses. Sebastian, therefore, is forced to speed things up.

When the first-string members learn that Ciel and Sebastian were searching in their tents, Joker leaves to consult Father. During this time, Sebastian takes advantage of Beast's distress by seducing her and eventually coaxing her to reveal Father's name.[98][99] In the morning, Sebastian and Ciel leave for the latter's London townhouse, where Ciel attempts to prepare for further investigation.[100] However due to Ciel's sickness, Agni convinces Sebastian that part of a butler's duty is to look after his master's health.[101] Much to Ciel's dismay, Sebastian follows this advice and delays him from confronting Baron Kelvin until that night.[102]

Ciel and Sebastian confronts Baron Kelvin and Joker.

Upon reaching the manor, Ciel and Sebastian learn that Joker and Baron Kelvin were expecting them and had prepared dinner.[103] Sebastian tests the wine for poison, but Ciel says he has no intention in eating.[104] Baron Kelvin has Joker put on an impromptu circus act using the untrained, kidnapped children for the cast.[105] After two children are killed by their acts, Ciel orders Sebastian to put a stop to it.[106] Ciel then pulls out a gun and points it at Baron Kelvin, ordering him to lead them to the remaining kidnapped children's location.[107] Ciel then learns that the Baron recreated the place where Ciel was used as a sacrifice. As a result, Ciel recalls his trauma and shoots Baron Kelvin.[108] When Joker attempts to go to his father's aid, Sebastian cuts off his left hand and orders him to not disturb his master.[109]
File:Sebastian fire.png

Sebastian sets the mansion on fire.

Doctor arrives and reveals that he used the kidnapped children to create the prosthetic limbs the cast members wear, and Sebastian comments on their exceptional quality.[110] Doctor then grabs one of the kidnapped children and slices her open.[111] This induces a complete breakdown in Ciel who recalls his own past, screaming and triggering an asthma attack.[112] However, Sebastian is able to calm him down slightly by grasping his hand and reminding him he is "outside of the cage" now. He holds Ciel and takes off his eye patch, telling him to call his name.[113] Ciel orders Sebastian to kill everyone and burn the place down. After killing the Doctor and Kelvin, Sebastian hesitates in burning the house down; he reminds Ciel that their mission from the Queen was not yet complete. Ciel responds by yelling at him and reminding him of his place. Sebastian then obeys the order and, using the seal, uses fire from candles to set the building ablaze.[114] After setting the building on fire, Sebastian then carries Ciel out, where they encounter Doll who had gone looking for her adoptive brother.[115] Doll becomes upset upon learning of Joker's death and attacks them.[116] Sebastian is later seen walking away from the mansion, and it is implied that he killed her.[117]

Afterwards, Sebastian boards a train with Ciel, and he is forced to join him in first class because third class was already full.[118] There he questions Ciel's kindness in visiting the Renbourn Workhouse (where the first-string members grew up) and comments that it is at odds with his willingness to slay the children he was supposed to save. When Ciel states that it is because they would be better off dead, Sebastian calls him arrogant.[119]

After the train ride, they get a short ride from a local to a hill that they climb to find the workhouse.[120] There they discover that the workhouse is in ruins, and it must have been abandoned for quite some time.[121] Sebastian comments that Baron Kelvin lied, and he likely allowed Doctor to carve up the brothers and sisters Joker referred to for more artificial limbs.[122] Ciel finds it amusing that the circus troupe would fight to defend something that doesn't exist, darkly commenting that humans are more devilish than real devils and that he himself is a human like them—something to which Sebastian cheerfully agrees, as he states that humans are interesting.[123]

Later, Ciel and Sebastian return to the manor, where Elizabeth exclaims that she wants to get new clothes and go on a boat ride.[124] To satisfy her wants, Sebastian calls in Nina Hopkins, a tailor the Phantomhives have worked with previously. Sebastian initially criticizes her designs, saying that the colors red and yellow do not suit Ciel and would make him look too childish.[125] As a result, Nina throws Ciel, Sebastian, and Elizabeth out of the room.[126]

When Ciel returns for a fitting, she removes his top, unhappy with the silhouette.[127] In order to prevent Elizabeth from seeing Ciel's slave mark, Sebastian places his hand over it according to Ciel's order, forcing Nina to suffer through awkwardly measuring Ciel.[128] Thinking that it is now safe, Sebastian removes his hand only to have Soma and Agni burst into the room. Sebastian then rips down a curtain, covering Ciel long enough to dress him and cover the brand.[129] He then leads them back to the dining hall, where Elizabeth learns that Ciel had recently been ill. She asks why Ciel never tells her anything, and Sebastian states that although it is a hard question to answer, Ciel seems more relaxed than he had been in a while, thanks to everyone's company.[130]

Phantomhive Manor Murders Arc

When Charles Grey and Charles Phipps arrive at the manor, Grey attacks Baldroy and Mey-Rin upon their entrance.[131] Sebastian intervenes in enough time to prevent Grey from stabbing Baldroy in the head.[132] He then lets them in to see Ciel. They announce that Queen Victoria wants Ciel to host a banquet for a guest, which Ciel reluctantly agrees to do.[133] Ciel then orders Sebastian to begin preparations and contact Lau and Undertaker as well.[134]

Sebastian presents his impromptu wine glass pyramid to shift their attention.

When the day of the banquet arrives, he and the other servants make sure the event runs smoothly. [135] However, a commotion arises between the drunk Georg von Siemens and Irene Diaz who feels harassed from being relentlessly touched by him.[136] This ends up with Ciel getting drenched with wine for defending Irene; to prevent a further disaster from happening, Sebastian grabs the wine bottle Grimsby Keane was about to throw and pours it into an exquisite wine glass pyramid. He successfully shifts everyone's attention with this act, leaving them in awe and developing a feeling of bliss.[137] On the other hand, Ciel and Sebastian start talking in French about Georg's displeasing attitude caused by heavy alcohol consumption. This catches Arthur Conan Doyle's attention who chuckles, drawing the pair's attention to him. Ciel simply puts his finger on his lips, telling Arthur that he must keep this a secret.[138]

Sebastian's body found dead.

Afterwards, they clean up in the kitchen when the guest of honor at the party, Georg von Siemens, suddenly requests their attention.[139] Mey-Rin and Sebastian go to see what he wants, and they hear a loud scream, which attracts all of the guests from the party.[140] When he does not unlock the door, Sebastian breaks it down and inside, they find Georg's corpse.[141] Because the majority of house guests blame Ciel for the murder, they decide he must be watched by one of them.[142] Arthur is chosen to watch Ciel, and they are handcuffed together.[143] At this time, Sebastian makes arrangements with the other servants of the house, giving them various instructions for the following days.[144] In the morning, Sebastian is found dead and does not wake up even when Ciel frantically orders him to.[145]

He is moved to the basement along with Georg's body.[146] While consuming breakfast, Charles Grey notices the seemingly extra plate served beside Irene and asks for it. Ciel insists that Sebastian would never mix up the numbers until they realize that Patrick is missing.[147] Arthur and Ciel rise quickly and go straight to Ciel's room to check on Patrick.[148] The room is locked and only Sebastian knows where its key is kept. Finnian volunteers to break in but is stopped by Grey who decides to destroy the door first since there are still desserts left to be eaten.[149] There, they find Patrick's dead body with needle-like wounds on his neck, which is similar to a vampire's bite mark.[150]

Later the residents search his body for the key but do not find it. Instead they find Sebastian's wet body, so they decide to move all three bodies to prevent further decay, but Ciel insists that they move the bodies later on. [151] When Jeremy Rathbone arrives, Sebastian's corpse, along with Patrick's and Georg's corpses, are moved into rooms according to the time they were murdered.[152] After Jeremy examines the bodies and everyone leaves, a suspicious Charles Grey impulsively rushes back upstairs and peeks under the blanket of Sebastian's corpse. Staring at him, he kicks him in the face but finds nothing amiss. [153][154]

After the case is solved, Arthur Conan Doyle is thanked by Jeremy for taking care of the "young master" in French.[155] Arthur suddenly realizes that something is odd about Jeremy and decides to rush back to the Phantomhive residence where he concludes that Jeremy is, in fact, Sebastian. Removing the disguise, it is revealed that Sebastian had been alive and well, posing as Jeremy since he arrived.[156] He even went so far as to "borrow" Patrick's corpse and dress it like himself at one point so that it could be more convincingly apparent that Sebastian and Jeremy were two different people[157].

Sebastian explains to Arthur what really happened that night, and in the process, reveals that Charles Grey was the one who killed him and Georg.[158][159] He also reveals to Arthur that he isn't human, frightening the latter. He even reveals his true form to him to make sure that he will eventually write about it. [160] After Arthur's departure, he states that Ciel liked Arthur's novel, to the extent that he reads the same magazine without throwing it away; therefore, he decided to reveal his true self to stimulate Arthur's imagination. Auspiciously, Arthur's next work will be something to look forward to.[161]

Afterwards, Ciel asks Sebastian about Patrick's murderer.[162] He asks if Ciel really wants to see the murderer and then proceeds to open a box where the murderer has been kept in, who turns out to be Snake.[163] Sebastian explains how he encountered Snake and later asks how Snake found his way to the mansion.[164] During the process, they discover that Snake got to the mansion because Soma gave him a carriage trip to the mansion, surprising the two of them.[165] Ciel learns that Snake came to his mansion because of his friends' disappearance after Ciel and Sebastian joined the circus.[166] Ciel then decides to take Snake in as a servant, surprising both Snake and Sebastian. At first Snake hesitates, but then accepts his offer.[167]

Sebastian's "corpse" being brought to his grave.

Sebastian's corpse is buried soon after. Before everyone leaves, the bell on Sebastian's grave starts to ring. Undertaker tells them that if the bell is ringing, it means that he is still alive.[168] Everyone hurriedly digs up his grave and when Sebastian gets up, he states that he was glad he could finally get out of the coffin. Elizabeth, Mey-Rin, Finnian, and Baldroy jump on top of him at the same time, crying in relief.[169] Later on, Tanaka gives him back his lapel pin, and Sebastian formally serves under Ciel once again.[170] Furthermore, he affirms to Elizabeth that he wishes to correct something she said earlier. When she wonders what she could have possibly said incorrectly, he confidently states that he does not tell lies.[171]

Luxury Liner Arc

Sebastian introduces Snake to the servants as the manor's new footman.[172] Baldroy asks Sebastian if he is really recruiting someone like Snake, even calling the new footman a "shady character". However, Sebastian states that it is the young master's decision, and he could not do anything about it.[173] After Ciel has finished his breakfast, Lau arrives and is surprised that Sebastian is alive. Lau complains about missing his chance to sneak some of Ciel's food; as he talks about Karnstein Hospital--- an institution that is believed to have the ability to revive the dead, he tells Ciel that they come down to the back docks to shop for foreign slaves illegally quite often. Yet lately, the number is quite 'unusual'. As a result, Lau implies that they might be performing illegal human experiments.[174] Ciel orders Sebastian to investigate it, and the latter returns in a doctor's costume. He informs Ciel that the hospital, together with upper class doctors opened an association called the Aurora Society. A nurse told him that they hold presentations of their results regularly and collect donations from nobles. In reality, it is a secret society that stands upon "The Complete Salvation of Mankind Through Medicine", as their motto. It has been confirmed that they conduct the illegal human experiments daily within the hospital. However, there were no signs of slaves in the hospital or anything pertaining to human experimentation and/or the revival of the dead.[175] Ciel asks him where next meeting will take place. Sebastian reveals that it is scheduled to be held in the Blue Star Line's luxury ship Campania, which is the same boat Elizabeth had invited Ciel to. Together with his master and Snake, they confirm passage on the cruise.[176] Shortly after arriving, the three find the Midford family. Elizabeth asks Ciel to escort her to a dinner party-- an invitation which he accepts and is heavily influenced by Sebastian. He informs Ciel that the meeting for the Aurora Society will be held on the nineteenth; therefore, he suggests that the young master should take a rest.[177]

Three days later, Sebastian accompanies Ciel, along with Snake, to the dinner party. Sebastian informs Ciel that the meeting is that evening. He reveals to Ciel the signal is an empty glass. Before spotting an empty glass being served, Snake overhears some guests whispering about his odd snake-like appearance. Ciel and Sebastian both comfort him, saying he is a "footman of a distinguished noble family." Upon spotting an empty glass, Sebastian quickly takes it, and he and Ciel head upstairs to the meeting.[178]

File:Phoenix Pose.png

Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian greet another member of the Aurora Society.

Sebastian is seen disguising himself with very long hair pulled back with a black ribbon, leaving the right side of his bangs untied. To enter the meeting, Sebastian explains that each member must purchase purified water which costs thirty pounds at the front door to fill his or her empty glass. He also whispers the greeting used in the Aurora Society, causing Ciel to have an extremely shocked expression.[179] After Ciel and another man exchange a verbal greeting, both Ciel and Sebastian pose imitating a type of bird pose, saying "The Phoenix" with completely straight faces. While Sebastian places his master's pin, Sebastian is interrupted by Undertaker's laughter.[180] Shortly after, the Viscount of Druitt greets them. Sebastian reminds Ciel that the Viscount has a medical license.[181]

Rian Stoker, the founder of the Aurora Society, begins a presentation about the society's goals of perfect health.[182] He has a dead body presented in a coffin, which is confirmed dead by Sebastian's distaste of the smell. The corpse is brought "back to life" by some form of electrical shocks.[183] However, the corpse begins attacking the spectators. Sebastian attempts to slay it by flinging silver dinner knives at the corpse, inflicting what should be fatal wounds. However, after failing to stop it, Sebastian states the moving corpse is "a being he does not understand". [184] Then a young Grim Reaper, Ronald Knox, appears and uses his Death Scythe (a lawnmower) to kill the corpse, stating that one must smash the head in to stop it.[185] A quick exchange of words between Ronald and Sebastian takes place, where Ronald reveals he's investigating reports of corpses that move on their own after their souls have been collected. After Ciel departs to follow Rian Stoker, a fight ensues, and then the two eventually part when Ronald realizes he'll have to work overtime if he doesn't get moving.[186][187]

Sebastian then appears in the cargo where Ciel, Elizabeth Midford, and Snake are trapped by the moving corpses. He kills several, then is given orders to "clean them up" from Ciel, and so he begins killing the giant crowd of corpses by bashing their heads in.[188] Ciel describes the scene as "Splattering crimson. A demon dancing." as he has flashbacks to the first time he had seen Sebastian kill.[189] When Sebastian finishes, Ciel notes his gloves are dirty with blood, so Sebastian changes them before helping the three down from their hiding place.[190] Sebastian then captures Rian Stoker, who had been sneaking around, and it is revealed that there are ten times as many moving corpses in another part of the ship that probably have escaped their coffins.[191] Ciel then orders Sebastian to find Lizzy's family and take them to a safe place. Sebastian quickly leaves to do as ordered.[192]

Once he finds the Midfords, Sebastian helps them in their fight against the corpses. He then explains he came to take them to a safe place, but he is told that they will stay to protect their fellow Englishmen. He tells them to stay safe; he then heads back to Ciel, Lizzy, and Snake as was ordered of him.[193] When Sebastian finally finds Ciel and Lizzy, they are falling out of the ducts and had been separated from Snake.[194] He helps Lizzy down, as he has caught Ciel who had already fallen, and tehy make haste to find the contraption that would stop the corpses.[195] Grell Sutcliff and Ronald Knox fall through a hole cut in the ceiling; Grell freaks out that he didn't have time to do his make-up because he wasn't told Sebastian was on the ship.[196] During the fight where Grell flirts with Sebastian, much to the latter's dismay, Grell accidentally cuts a hole in one of the walls, releasing a surge of flooding water into the room. The water throws Ciel and Lizzy out into the hallway where Ciel's leg becomes injured as the fight within the room continues while Lizzy has been surrounded a group of corpses.[197] Sebastian, being restrained by Ronald's blows, is unable to rescue both Ciel and Elizabeth at that moment. Much to his and Ciel's surprise, Lizzy starts to attack the corpses, revealing her sword fighting prowess.[198] She then proceeds to attack Grell, but Sebastian stops her. He apologizes for failing as a butler, for Lizzy was forced to perform such actions.[199] He states that he will take over the fighting from that point on, but both groups realize that time is running out. Ciel points out that they must find Rian while Grell asks if "putting the screws" to Rian will fix the problem. Ronald simply shows Grell a page from his soul reaping list and agrees, leaving the three.[200] Snake rejoins the group, and they leave to head to the life boats while Sebastian carries the injured Ciel.[201]

When they reach the lifeboats, Sebastian is forced to knock Lizzy out. Ciel gives up his seat for Snake, and the two then leave to find Rian, and stop the corpses.[202] On the way Ciel and Sebastian run into Viscount Aleistor Chamber, who has the disarming device. Helping to carry the device is a very entertained Undertaker. They head to a main hall, and there Rian and the Shinigami rejoin the group. They then listen to the Viscount's plan to be the leader of a new world, and all present perform the "Phoenix Pose" for him, although almost everyone agrees to kill him.[203] However, when the Viscount attempts to stop the corpses using the machine, it does not work. Grell then, in anger and frustration, attempts to kill the Viscount.[204] However he is stopped by Undertaker, who reveals himself to be a Grim Reaper, or as Grell says a "Deserter" (in the anime he retired).[205] Undertaker then explains how his curiosity led him to create the moving corpses, which he calls Bizarre Dolls, by adding to the cinematic record so the body would believe it has not died, even though the soul has been removed.[206] Grell attacks two dolls and finds after the "End" of their cinematic records a continuation with Undertaker dressed as Charlie Chaplin.[207] He then explains about the dolls, since they lack souls, they are trying to take them in order to make themselves complete. Therefore, they attack the living; however, they can't make another soul theirs. He also explains the dolls were placed on the ship in equal amount to the living to see how much of each creature would survive.[208]

From this point a fight ensues between Undertaker, Grell, Ronald, and Sebastian. Both Grell and Ronald, and Sebastian want to capture Undertaker for their own reasons; this results in an intense battle where both sides fail to capture Undertaker.[209] Grell and Ronald use a full on frontal attack, which still fails because Undertaker reveals he still has his own death scythe (which is the more classic grim reaper style).[210] Undertaker then attacks the pillars holding up Ciel; however, Sebastian rescues him, but then Undertaker captures Ciel. As a result, Sebastian attacks Undertaker, falling for a trap. Ciel is thrown off the upper level balcony, and as Sebastian attempts to rescue him, he is run through with Undertaker's scythe.[211]From here Sebastian's cinematic record is seen--- his memories after killing Ciel's captors, bringing Ciel home, and both training Ciel to be a proper gentleman and earl while simultaneously being taught to be a proper butler, all come into view. Sebastian then snaps out of these memories since he was reminded of how greatly he desires Ciel's soul, and he rescues Ciel despite his injuries.[212] Undertaker goes to kill him, stating it is better because he is really making Ciel miserable.[213] Just then the boat tilts sharply upwards which led to Rian's fall and his eventual death.[214]

Ronald makes a comment about Sebastian acting tough despite being seriously weakened by the blow delivered by Undertaker. Sebastian proves him wrong by beating the young Reaper and throwing him in the way of Grell, who had begun to attack Undertaker again. Sebastian then smugly remarks that youngsters (like Ronald) are feeble and rely too much on their death scythes, which Sebastian has taken possession of.[215] Just then the boat begins to sink, and Grell attacks Undertaker's legs while Sebastian (who is holding Ciel) attacks the head. He dodges both, but the chain of lockets hanging from his waist, are cut off, and caught by Ciel, much to Undertakers dismay. He then smiles and asks Ciel to take care of the chain because it is his treasure.[216] Undertaker then slices the ship in two with his death scythe.[217]

Sebastian battling the bizarre dolls

Sebastian has a difficult time ensuring Ciel's safety while carrying him, so he promptly puts a life ring around Ciel, and then throws him overboard into the icy ocean.[218] Ciel nearly drowns, but he is saved when Sebastian pulls him out of the water and into an unoccupied lifeboat taken from the sinking ship, and he then proceeds to kick them to safety. While kicking, a Bizarre Doll emerges from the water and bites Sebastian's leg, accompanied by countless others.[219] Ciel tells Sebastian to get in the lifeboat with him, but the dolls begin to destroy the boat in an effort to get to Ciel. Sebastian attempts to fight them off with an oar, but there seem to be too many. He is then ordered to eradicate them, and proceeds to do so using the oar but making quite a mess.[220] Finally, Sebastian succeeds but immediately winces in pain. The Undertaker's Death Scythe blow has significantly weakened him and he begins to cough up blood. Sebastian apologizes to Ciel for his unseemly state, but instead, Ciel congratulates him on a job well done and advises him to rest once back at the manor.[221]

After Ciel returns and gets well, Elizabeth organizes an Easter Egg Hunt for him. Many of Ciel’s “friends” (Nina Hopkins, Agni, Soma, Edward Midford, and the Queen’s two Charles) along with the servants participate in the event. Sebastian decides to make things interesting by turning it into a game. Partnered with Ciel, he easily handles everything to secure Ciel’s victory. As a result, Ciel succeeds in getting the prize and presenting it to Elizabeth. [222]

Public School Arc

Queen Victoria informs Ciel that students at Weston College have been refusing to return home and asks him to investigate, including her cousin Derrick Arden. Ciel decides it would be best to infiltrate the school himself. He orders Sebastian to figure out his own way into the school.[223]

Ciel enrolls after he and Sebastian open a spot by doing something to a student and making him unable to attend. On his first day, some of his dorm mates "welcome" him by throwing him on a sheet and launching him into the air. Before they can do it twice, Sebastian, in disguise, appears and stops them. He then 'introduces' himself to Ciel as the dorm supervisor, Michaelis.[224] Later on, after Sebastian is summoned by Ciel, he confirms with Ciel that Derrick was transferred to the Purple House. Ciel then gives him the task of cleaning up the dining hall while Ciel goes to investigate at the dormitory.[225]

Despite already being as the dorm supervisor, Ciel's work for Clayton is handed over to Sebastian, much to his dismay[226]. At night, Ciel notifies Sebastian about his invitation to the Swan Gazebo and orders him to make teacakes in hopes of impressing the P4. However, the next day, Ciel complains to him about how Maurice Cole had lied about the time of the meeting, causing him to arrive 2 hours late. Sebastian states that Maurice Cole behaved in this manner out of jealousy[227]. They discuss further, speculating that Maurice has been using inappropriate methods for his own benefit. Ciel then orders Sebastian to talk to other people who had been deceived by Maurice in the past and thoroughly investigate Maurice's activity patterns.[228] Throughout the course of the day, he follows Maurice around, witnessing him asking other students to perform fag tasks for him. Later that day, he meets Joanne Harcourt in the library. In the chapel, Harcourt sobbingly tells Sebastian about how Maurice deceived him before. Sebastian comforts him, and he then reports his findings to Ciel in the evening.[229]

One day after the arrival of Prince Soma at the school, he and Ciel use Soma to discover more secrets regarding Maurice. [230]. After planning a strategy with his master, Sebastian collects the tiny pieces of the flower cards which Maurice used to communicate with his entourage[231].

The next day, in the 3rd art room, Ciel confronts Cole. Outside the window, bat-like, Sebastian silently watches the entire scene. Although boredom is starting to set in, he continues to help Ciel. [232] Afterwards, Clayton makes Ciel his fag. [233] Later on, he complains to Sebastian that he feels like an “opera singer”. He has now concluded that Gregory Violet will have the most information about Derrick Arden; he just has to figure out a way to get close to him. [234]

While Ciel tries to uncover more information through the P4 and their fags, Sebastian investigates things from his end. He questions Vice Principal Johann Agares about the students. Agares tells him that the principal handled them. When the VP suddenly trips, Sebastian helps him up. When he touches his arm, Sebastian immediately realizes something is wrong. [235]

In Latin class, Sebastian leaves a note for Ciel to meet him later. Ciel goes to the Sapphire Owl Dormitory’s library at night to meet Sebastian. Sebastian suddenly grabs Ciel and clamps his hand over his mouth, startling him. Lawrence Bluewer suddenly comes in, and Professor Michaelis kindly asks him if he can help him with something. Bluewer declines assistance and leaves. Sebastian then helps Ciel out of his robes—he apologizes for being rough, but he knew Ciel was being followed. After comparing notes, Ciel decides that they’ll take action tonight. Sebastian admonishes him that he’ll get “2 Y’s” for walking around at night. Ciel replies that he has nothing to fear as long as he’s with a “teacher”. At Violet Wolf Dormitory, Ciel starts a fire by hurling a lighted torch through a window. He reminds Sebastian of Rule #87—now all they have to do is wait for Derrick Arden and the other boys to come out. [236]

When the fire starts spreading, Sebastian suddenly grabs Ciel, and they both continue to observe from atop a tree. [237] As the students start pouring out, Ciel tells Sebastian to keep an eye out for Derrick and the other boys. However, Sebastian uses his demonic powers and concludes that there are no souls left in the building. [238] Ciel sighs and then tells Sebastian to help put out the fire. Professor Michaelis shocks all the students by bringing Soma’s elephant to help put out the fire. [239] Students from other dormitories also come to help. Gregory Violet suddenly scream—no one should go into Violet House. Soma shouts back that Gregory cannot protect with his “worthless pride”. Gregory then concedes and allows everyone to help. Separately, Ciel and Sebastian observe the whole scene. [240]

Sebastian meets up with Ciel later when he comes to thank him for his glowing recommendation to join Sapphire Owl’s cricket team. Ciel runs happily to Professor Michaelis and thanks him for his support. Professor Michaelis replies that he’ll be happy to help him with the details. Both of them think along the same lines—they know there is no clear standard for the special player’s selection. However, Ciel believes if he can make points, bring victory to his dorm, and make everyone shed tears, it will assure him the final prize.

On June 3rd, the night before the big game, all the dorms hold a grand party, each once arriving in the main hall with great fanfare. Sebastian quietly laughs when Ciel enters with his team “God Only Knows”, and they receive an awkward reaction form the guests. [241] Once the P4 light the torches, Sebastian and Ciel watch as VP Agares declares 1889’s Inter-Dormitory Cricket Tournament open.

When the party commences, although Sebastian does his best to remain unnoticed, Frances Midford recognizes him. After their slight banter, she realizes that they are both here on the Queen’s business. Edward comments that he didn’t recognize Sebastian at all, stunning Ciel. Sebastian asks them all to keep their secrets. [242] Elizabeth’s father then announces that he hopes to see another “Blue Miracle”. After he narrates the entire story, Ciel can’t believe that his predecessor was in the Blue House. Alexis Leon Midford tells Ciel he possesses the blood of genius game maker—it’s sure to be an exciting match. [243] Ciel watches as Sebastian “handles” the drawing for the “fair and impartial” dorm matchups for the game. [244] The game between Scarlet Fox and Sapphire Owl begins.

As the game progresses, Sebastian notices the servants’ lively behavior with Elizabeth and wonders what they are up to. [245] Furthermore, Sebastian also observes that Edgar Redmond is quite a talented cricket player. [246] On the other hand, Sebastian can’t believe that Lau entered the school’s grounds and is offering gambling services to everyone—he smiles, thinking Lau hasn’t changed at all. [247]

When the score is Blue 21-Red 80, they take a break. Ciel plans to discuss their team’s strategy, but their “coach” has “disappeared”. Although the other players are worried, Ciel tells them to leave it to him. [248] At the end of the meeting, Professor Michaelis returns and apologizes—he was in the bathroom.

Sebastian watches as Ciel faces Harcourt. Harcourt, a spin bowler, tries his best to defeat Ciel, but Ciel resolutely defends the wicket. Moreover, batting is not their only counterattack—members of Team Red are suddenly overcome by acute gastricular discomfort. (Sebastian worked as a waiter during the break and fed Team Red laxative-filled meat pies). Team Red forfeits the match, and Team Blue is declared the victor.

Later, Sebastian, as Professor Michaelis, meets with Tanaka and hands him the family’s lunch. Tanaka lightly jokes that he hopes the “food” is “safe”. Sebastian assures him it is. As Tanaka leaves, he tells Sebastian he’s looking forward to another “Blue Miracle”. Sebastian bows and agrees that it will be done. [249]

After Gregory Violet’s team’s defeat, Team Blue faces Team Green. Ciel says they should win for Red House as well. [250] Professor Michaelis, as their coach, decides to cheer them on as well. [251] When the game begins, Professor Michaelis asks the music students (who are acting as Team Blue’s cheerleaders) to play the “Radetzky March”. [252] Through Professor Michaelis’s carefully timed cues, Team Blue succeeds. However, Edward Midford figures out the trick and comes out to bowl. When he bowls out the player using Violet House’s “Purple Burnout”, Ciel is shocked. Sebastian concludes that Edward is exceptional in his own way. [253] Suddenly, Sebastian sees the principal sitting in the stands. He hands over the reins to McMillan and rushes toward him. Ciel realizes what Sebastian is doing—if they can catch the principal, the case will be solved once and for all. [254]

Sebastian chases after the principal. However, he manages to elude Sebastian while he’s using his demonic powers, shocking him. Unable to pursue him any further, Sebastian heads back to the grounds. He arrives just in time as Professor Michaelis. Catching Ciel, he states their first priority is medical attention. Ciel joyfully replies that he’s so happy, he can forget about the pain. Amidst the cheering students, Sebastian holds Ciel, softly saying he’s really a bad child. [255]

In the medical office, Ciel loudly complains as Sebastian dresses his wound—painful things are painful no matter what. Sebastian smiles and says that everything went according to plan, but Ciel received a much nicer “medal”. Plus, he also recovered the rigged ball that Lawrence used it the final play. Holding it, Ciel remarks he can’t understand why Lawrence would throw a ball when he knew would lose. Sebastian replies that that is just the way humans are. Sebastian then apologizes—the principal got away from him. Shocked, Ciel orders Sebastian to make him something sweet to eat. Sebastian shows him the dessert he has already prepared—unfortunately, he smiles, Ciel will have to eat it later. Suddenly, Blue House’s members pour in and congratulate Ciel. McMillan tells Ciel to get ready at once for the victory boat parade. [256]

Sebastian gives Ciel a new, slim fitting outfit for the parade. He tells Ciel he made it because Ciel said that he would win. During the boat parade, Ciel looks at the smiling Queen and thinks he’ll definitely present the truth to her. However, when they are about to salute, Lawrence tells him a startling truth—they never thought they would win, so they never practiced the boat ride. The boat tips over and all the Blue House boys topple into the river. All the spectators, including Professor Michaelis, laugh good-naturedly. [257]

During the party, Ciel is surrounded by his carefree and playful friends (Elizabeth, Soma, and McMillan. Sebastian also observes all the guests as they mingle. When Ciel returns to his room, an invitation for the Midnight Tea Party is on his bed. He realizes ecstatically that this is his chance to meet the principal. After informing Sebastian of the details, he heads to the given location alone.

When Derrick, however, turns out to be a Bizarre Doll, Ciel immediately summons Sebastian [258] and orders him to capture Derrick. Amidst everyone’s shocks and screams, Sebastian whisks the tablecloth off the table and uses it to subdue Derrick. Sebastian then proceeds to help Edward with Herman’s arm. [259]

Ciel tells the astonished group that he came to this school at someone’s request to investigate the missing boys—Professor Michaelis is actually his butler Sebastian. Ciel announces that this proves that the boys are already dead and whips out his gun. He points it at the principal and asks him to tell the truth. [260] When everyone is about to protest about Ciel’s sudden change in behavior, Edward unexpectedly speaks up—they all shouldn’t interfere with Earl Phantomhive. [261] Furthermore, the other fags are dumbfounded as the P4 confess to their crime-killing Derrick Arden. Sebastian, however, concludes that everything was fairly straightforward until the principal shrouded everything in mystery. Although the P4 protest that the principal had nothing to do with it, the principal suddenly speaks. It was so entertaining to watch their struggles, and they provided him with the finest of laughs. Sebastian tells the principal to drop the act—Sebastian then draws his arm in front of Ciel as Undertaker reveals himself. [262]

Ciel is shocked to see Undertaker. Undertaker laughingly asks Ciel if he’s enjoying his first time in group life. Sebastian states he was wondering where he went after the Campania incident and he closed his shop. He adds that he can’t believe that Undertaker took a job at a school. [263] Sebastian then turns to the P4; he asks them what was so important that they would resort to murder. After the P4’s tell their complete story, Lawrence turns to a speechless Ciel, asserting that he knows Ciel can understand what they did was right. Undertaker bursts out laughing; Sebastian smiles and says it’s rare for them to agree on something. [264] Ciel thinks to himself that the difference between education and brainwashing is paper thin. [265] Aloud, he tells the P4 that he will explain the circumstances to the concerned parties; Sebastian smiles when he hears this.

Ciel then directs his attention to Undertaker, questioning him about his motives. Undertaker replies that he will tell him since he has been paid his fee. He states that he has discovered that even the dead can evolve. They have their dreams of the future; this compels them to move forward. Ciel demands to know what he plans to achieve by bringing the dead back to life. Undertaker answers that he wants to know what comes after the predetermined end. As Ciel starts, Sebastian holds onto his arm. Undertaker adds that there might be interesting developments lurking behind the “end credits”. Sebastian then interrupts that this where they disagree—because death is such a hopeless and definite end, that is why it is beautiful. After hearing Sebastian’s response, Undertaker is silent. Undertaker then announces that he will be taking his leave now; Ciel declares that he won’t let him get away again. [266] He orders Sebastian to capture him, but Vice Principal Agares comes to Undertaker’s defense. Sebastian comments that he knew it—Agares is also a Bizarre Doll. Undertaker proclaims that Agares was his masterpiece. Derrick’s friends suddenly surround the other boys; Ciel yells at everyone to get out of the garden. [267]

Meanwhile, Sebastian states at Undertaker, asking him if he thinks this Doll is enough to hold him—Undertaker is really underestimating him. Undertaker replies that he’s not underestimating him—they just have completely different goals. Jolted, Sebastian sees an incredibly realistic simulation of their fight in his mind—Undertaker would easily capture Ciel and use him against him. Alarmed, Sebastian realizes that there is only one course of action—he breaks free from Agares and rushes to Ciel. At the same time, Undertaker escapes, stating he knew that Sebastian would do that—he should continue to loyally protect Ciel forever. [268]

Ciel immediately yells at Sebastian, telling him he ordered him not to let Undertaker get away. Sebastian replies that as per the contract, protecting Ciel’s life is his top priority. [269] As he smashes one of the doll’s skulls, he adds that he cultivated it, so he won’t be robbed of it. Simultaneously, Ciel notices a wobbly Harcourt behind him—Sebastian explains that he had to knock him out so he could fight easily. [270]

After Sebastian has defeated all the Bizarre Dolls, Edward suddenly burst back into the garden. He tells Ciel that everyone else has been evacuated. Ciel cautions him to watch his step—they are all done here as well. [271] Edward then tells Ciel how scared he is—in a year, he may have become like the P4, believing that there is justice in murder. Ciel smiles and states that as long as Edward thinks like that, he is still normal, adding “unlike himself” under his breath.

After Ciel’s meeting with the Queen, Ciel and Sebastian head home. Sebastian states that Ciel worked hard. Ciel answers that he wants to go home and eat sweets. Sebastian then offers him McMillan’s letter. Ciel responds that he won’t be returning to “that cramped miniature garden ever again”. [272]

At the mansion, Sebastian and Ciel find the servants occupied with some loose sheep. Ciel unexpectedly laughs—he tells Sebastian to handle the situation and then make some tea. Sebastian heads to the kitchen to prepare a fabulous dessert; simultaneously, he simply burns McMillan’s letter in the oven.

Life returns to normal at the Phantomhive manor. One morning as Sebastian is assisting Ciel, Soma bursts into his bedroom, demanding to know why he has left school. Ciel replies that he’s welcome to stay, but Soma responds that he learned everything they are teaching when he was a young child. Sebastian and Ciel are left speechless after hearing this. Agni also comes in, and Sebastian casually comments that he just saw him last at Weston College, secretly protecting Soma. Infuriated that Agni went against his orders, Soma loudly complains to an upset Agni. Ciel and Sebastian use this opportunity to leave. Ciel tells them they will be leaving the mansion in their capable hands. [273]

Ciel and Sebastian then take the four servants to London. Ciel travels from store to store getting the things they want and need. At Daunt Book Store, Ciel buys a historical novel by Arthur, surprising Sebastian. Ciel adds that it would be a good way to kill time. [274] Afterwards Sebastian takes the group to the Somerset House—he wanted to take a closer look at Undertaker’s mourning chain. [275] Several names come up, but none of them have anything in common. Ciel suddenly recognizes one of the names as his grandmother’s. Astounded, they both wonder what kind of ties Undertaker has to the Phantomhives. Finally, at Harrod’s Stores they all see Funtom’s new line of ladies products. Sebastian tells Ciel that it’s good that he chose to expand in this area, but he needs more knowledge than just data and statistics. Annoyed Ciel tells him to be quiet. [276]

Suddenly a scream shatters the air, and Sebastian takes off leaving Baldroy in charge. Sebastian rescues Irene Diaz and safely delivers her to her destination. In exchange for his assistance and discretion, he enlists her aid to be a spokesperson for the new Funtom line of ladies’ products. Meanwhile, while Ciel is furiously waiting for Sebastian’s return, people suddenly rush to buy Funtom’s ladies’ products. When Sebastian returns, he explains everything to an irritated Ciel. Unexpectedly, Ciel realizes the value in using a celebrity to pitch products—therefore, he decides to use Irene’s face on all their ad campaigns. As he explains everything to Sebastian in his study later, Sebastian claps lightly, stating Ciel’s greed knows no bounds. [277]

Emerald Witch Arc

A week ago, Ciel received a letter from the Queen; she asked him to investigate a series of mysterious deaths in Germany. Ciel complained that he did not even speak German; it wasn’t also his duty to investigate underground activities outside of England. Sebastian suggested that he should just ask the Queen why she’s sending him, but he replied that she would just evade the question. [278]

Ciel first questioned his uncle [279] who Sebastian quickly and efficiently brought from a sauna in Finland. Since Ciel was unable to get any useful information from him, he decided to head to Germany himself. He added that he would also pay “him” a visit since he’s going to Germany anyway. [280] He ordered Sebastian to prepare the tickets.

Presently, Ciel and Sebastian travel to Germany by train. Although Sebastian tutored him, Ciel is unable to understand the “East Franconian dialect of Southern Germany”. [281] Annoyed, he tells Sebastian all of his studying was a waste of time. Sebastian covers his laughing mouth, saying Ciel had to start with the basics.

Ciel orders Sebastian to ask the man about the curse. The information Sebastian gets is inconclusive; therefore, Ciel decides to head to the werewolf forest because it would be meaningless to talk to a crazy person. Sebastian states the man does not want to take them; Ciel slyly replies that they should just buy the carriage then. [282]

Sebastian instructs the servants to load the luggage in the second carriage. Then they all proceed into the werewolf forest. Sebastian and Ciel are together in one carriage. Noticing that his compass is spinning wildly, Ciel comments that there must be mineral resources nearby. Sebastian mockingly responds that it could be the curse. Although Ciel dismisses the notion, Sebastian states that his response is strange—Ciel is a boy who has met Shinigami and Demons, yet he denies the existence of curses and werewolves. Moreover, the seal on his eye is also a type of curse. Sebastian explains that demons only appear when humans give up their souls for their wish. [283] When Ciel asks if Sebastian ever appeared at any Satanic rituals, Sebastian responds that those were just lecherous meetings of vile humans.

The group suddenly sees a village in the forest, and everyone disembarks from the carriages. [284] They are all then unexpectedly surrounded by angry villages who are waving their pitchforks at the group. Ciel instructs Sebastian that they want to speak to the Lord of the village[285] (who the villagers have mentioned). Suddenly, Sieglinde Sullivan, a young girl in a strong man’s arms, appears. She introduces herself as the Lord of this forest. She explains that their village, Wolfsschlucht, doesn’t allow visitors. [286] However, Sullivan tells her butler Wolfram Gelzer to ask them to come to the Emerald Castle. On the way, Sullivan (speaking in German) asks Ciel’s age. Ciel feels she’s saying something rude (she called him “Shorty” in German); Sebastian tells her that Ciel is 13 years old.

When they arrive at the manor, Sullivan tells Wolfram to show the servants to their quarters. [287] Sebastian leaves Ciel with Sullivan in the dining room and proceeds to the kitchen. [288] In the kitchen, Sebastian offers to prepare Mauetaschen [289] He also instructs the servants to rest after their long journey. When Sebastian finally returns to Ciel’s side, he has prepared the meal; however, they are interrupted with news about a werewolf attack. [290] Ciel is shocked, whereas Sebastian is skeptical.

Ciel and Sebastian both ask Sullivan if they may accompany her so they can learn about the forest’s dangers. [291] They are unable to deduce anything from the old woman’s ravings. Later on, when Ciel is with Sebastian in his room, he instructs him to prepare some strong tea since it’s going to be a long night. [292] Suddenly Ciel spits out his tea, and Sebastian discovers Sullivan eavesdropping outside their door. [293] After countless misunderstandings, [294] Sullivan tells them about her ancestor the Green Witch. Furthermore, she wants them to tell her all about the outside world since she has never left this place. [295] Ciel starts by showing her some toys; after some time playing, she falls asleep. Sebastian congratulates an exhausted Ciel for working so hard and communicating with the simple words he knew [296] Suddenly, Wolfram comes in; he apologizes for Sullivan’s behavior and carries her out. He instructs Sebastian to leave as soon as dawn breaks. [297]

Consequently, Ciel and Sebastian secretly head into the forest to investigate. [298] Sebastian thinks that he can’t sense anything or feel any presence. Suddenly, tears start falling from Ciel’s eyes. He is unable to stop it; his skin also starts changing color. Unexpectedly, the werewolf appears and runs off. Unconcerned about his condition, Ciel wants to follow it immediately, but Sebastian stops him. He states that there is something wrong in this forest, and he must take Ciel back. Once he deposits Ciel back in his room, Sebastian heads out once more. Suddenly, he starts crying too. He is shocked because as a demon he doesn’t feel the emotions that cause tears. The teardrops in his palm suddenly turn to blood; Sebastian fearfully realizes that he’s bleeding from his nose as well. [299]

He recalls the conversation with the old man—the people who see the werewolf will be cursed. Sebastian watches horrified as his skin also changes color and starts swelling. Alarmed, he rushes back to Ciel, but it’s too late—Ciel is even worse off than he is. [300]

Holding Ciel in his arms, Sebastian rushes to Sullivan’s room, calling her to come out quickly. When she opens the door, he begs her to save Ciel. [301] Realizing they went into the forest, she orders Wolfram to prepare the ceremony. During the ritual, (which takes place in an underground chamber), Sebastian insists that he’s fine, but Ciel is not responding normally.

Nevertheless, after the ritual is complete, Sebastian carries Ciel back to his room. When Ciel regains consciousness, Sebastian reaches his hand out to Ciel when Ciel unexpectedly knocks it away. [302] Ciel then grabs hold of Finnian, surprising everyone. He says “Ciel doesn’t want pain anymore”; this confuses everyone even more. When Sebastian tries again, Tanaka stops him. Ciel suddenly starts screaming about the lights being too dim. Everyone feels that his eyesight may have been affected by the attack as well.

After they’ve left the room, Mey-Rin starts crying about his condition. Baldroy tells her to stop, saying it’s bad luck. Tanaka asks Sebastian what they should do. Sebastian sorrowfully states he does not know since he cannot go near Ciel. Nevertheless, he excuses himself in order to do something. [303]

Returning to the forest, Sebastian contemplates that it’s impossible for him to be affected by evil miasma. [304] When he returns to discuss the situation with Sullivan, she explains that Ciel has been affected by the evil miasma of the werewolves. This power weakens the heart and increases fear. [305] Sebastian wonders if this is the reason Ciel is refusing to accept adults. Sullivan responds that it is possible that’s why he’s only accepting the gardener. Wolfram suddenly grabs Sebastian and yells at him for entering the forest. Sullivan immediately orders him to release Sebastian. [306] Once he does, Sebastian bows to Sullivan and begs her to save Ciel. [307] She agrees, but in exchange, she wants Sebastian to be her butler until Ciel is healed. [308]

Sebastian starts taking care of Sullivan. Watching his excellent form, Sullivan tells Wolfram to learn from him as well. [309] In the morning, Sebastian greets all of the servants. [310] He puts Baldroy in charge of lunch; Snake will polish the silverware, and Mey-Rin is in charge of the linen. [311] Tanaka can stay as he is (he is once again in his small form). Lastly, Sebastian sighs and tells Finnian to take care of Ciel. Finnian is about to happily agree; yet, he shrieks when he understands what Sebastian has asked him to do. Sebastian tells him to feed Ciel some food; if he doesn’t have any appetite, he can give him some warm milk with honey. [312]

Sebastian continues to take care of and educate Sullivan throughout the day. Watching Wolfram’s behavior, he tells him it’s not a butler’s duty to be overly affectionate and spoil their master. [313]

Later on, Sebastian brings Sullivan to see Ciel. [314] Finnian happily points out that she is speaking English now. Sebastian quietly tells him to clear the dishes and leave. Sullivan proceeds to change Ciel’s bandages. [315] Afterwards, when Sebastian is carrying her back, she asks him if he and Ciel are both devil worshippers. Although Sebastian tries to explain Ciel’s traumatic past and the circumstances of their meeting, she misunderstands. [316] Not realizing he’s really a demon, she tells Sebastian that she’ll keep their “secret” from the rest of the household.

Sullivan then addresses the rest of the Phantomhive household. She tells them that Ciel’s eyes are fine; the condition was mostly psychological. [317] All of them are extremely relieved. Baldroy immediately suggest that they head back to the manor so Ciel can get some real rest. [318] Mey-Rin states she knows he just wants to cook him some meat. Finnian wants to make snacks, and Snake wants to make scones-all for Ciel. Sebastian sighs and asks them not to increase the workload.

Next, Sebastian asks Snake to help him with something. [319] They go into the underground section; however, instead of heading towards the cellar, Sebastian goes in the opposite direction. There he finds a secret door, surprising Snake. They both wonder where it leads to, but before they can investigate further, Wolfram discovers them. Sebastian easily smoothes over the situation, and he leaves with Snake. Wolfram again orders them to leave.

Meanwhile, Finnian is taking care of Ciel when a werewolf attacks them. [320] He protects Ciel, and he kicks the werewolf out of the window. The servants burst in, and Finnian tells them what happened. Baldroy wants to go after him, but Sebastian stops him. [321] Sullivan says something about a ritual and leaves with Wolfram.

A few minutes later, the servants beg Ciel to come out of bed—everything is all right now. However, Ciel screams that he just wants to go home. As Sebastian is bandaging Finnian’s back’s wounds, he is conflicted over Ciel’s contradictory orders (before, Ciel confidently said they are not leaving until they solve the case—now he’s yelling he wants to go home). Sebastian wonders what he should do now. [322]

Sebastian, Snake, Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Tanaka discuss how they can help Ciel. [323] Sebastian suggests shocking him some more, but Tanaka is against this. Tanaka states it would be best to watch over Ciel until he gets better. Baldroy adds that this is the reason that he doesn’t like the occult. [324] Sebastian agrees to not try anything strange-just to sit and wait. [325]

Later on, Snake rushes to tell Sebastian a “big scoop”; [326] Oscar came back from the underground area. Sebastian asks him what Oscar discovered. Snake tells him along with the rest of the household that there are werewolves in the castle’s basement as well as something else. Baldroy questions Snake about what this “something else”, but he is unable to explain further. They believe Sullivan is in league with the werewolves; however, Mey-Rin states her concern and worry for Ciel was not false. [327] Snake adds that there is a magical charm on the door that forbids intruders’ entry. [328] Mey-Rin asks Sebastian how he will proceed. He tells them he’s going underground to see for himself. If Wolfram returns, he instructs them to distract him until he returns. [329] In the underground chamber, Sebastian discovers strange magical markings and drawings. As he tries to decipher them, he suddenly reaches a startling conclusion.

Sebastian returns to the others just in time to save the German maid from one of Snake’s snakes. As she screams, Sebastian effortlessly grabs it and returns it to Snake, surprising the Germans. After the excitement dies down and the main household is once again alone, Snake states that Oscar has another “scoop” to report—the maid smells just like one of the werewolves.

Suddenly Snake and Sebastian hear a noise and rush outside. The Queen’s footman John Brown has brought a letter for them. Although they are surprised to see him, [330] Sebastian accepts the letter on Ciel’s behalf. He informs John that the Earl is not well. [331] John, nevertheless, says he needs an immediate answer; therefore, he allows Sebastian to read the letter’s contents. After Sebastian reads it, he is shocked, but he sends John off with a response at once. [332] Sebastian tells Snake they now have to “pick up the pace”. [333]

Sebastian heads to Ciel’s room. There he asks Finnian to leave for a while. Although Finnian resists with all his strength, he is unable to stop Sebastian. After Sebastian throws him out of the room, Finnian is shocked that Sebastian didn’t even flinch under his full strength. [334]

Sebastian starts talking to Ciel telepathically. He asks Ciel if he’s decided to abandon his position as the Queen’s watchdog. [335] The darkness slowly envelops Ciel as Sebastian issues his ultimatum—abandoning his revenge halfway is against the contract. [336] He was going to follow Tanaka’s suggestion and wait, but now they are out of time. He finally declares that it’s a boring end to Ciel’s journey, and he doubts that Ciel will be able to fill him up. [337]

After escaping his inner world, Ciel wakes up in the darkness; he orders Sebastian to instantly let go of him. Sebastian smiles and states that he’s glad his “Young Master” has returned to him. Ciel responds that it was a terrible wake up call. [338] Sitting up in bed, Ciel suddenly puts his foot on Sebastian’s shoulder—he asks Sebastian if he was really trying to eat him just now. [339] Sebastian lightly responds that he was only 90% serious.

After a few minutes, Ciel tells Sebastian to let “them” in; he’ll talk to them now. Sebastian opens the door, and all of the servants tumble into the room. [340] Sebastian remarks that they’re really rude for listening at their master’s door. Finnian tries to lunge on to Ciel, but Sebastian stops him. Ciel smiles and offers him his hand instead; crying, Finnian takes it. [341]

All of them, Sebastian included, then line up by Ciel’s bedside. Ciel speaks—because of his carelessness, they all suffered and worried. He asks them to forgive him. Although they are surprised, he adds determinedly that they will never see him in such a sorry state again. He finally asks that they continue to serve him. [342] They all respond with “Yes, My Lord.”

After a few minutes of the servants’ light banter, Ciel also makes another request—he wants them to forget how he was until now. Mey-Rin deduces that Ciel also recalls his off-the-charts behavior. [343] Ciel adds that he didn’t want to behave like that. Baldroy concludes that Ciel reacted the same way as soldiers. On the battlefield, when they are wounded for the first time, they panic. [344] Sebastian wonders if the attack’s aim was purely psychological. When Ciel asks him to explain, Sebastian relates the news about the Queen’s letter. He also had the components of the antidote analyzed. When Ciel reads the Queen’s letter, everything starts to fall into place. However, he’s incredibly annoyed with the Queen’s final request—she wants the “little green witch to come to tea”. [345]

Ciel knows this request won’t be easy to accomplish. Sebastian adds that even the Queen’s selfishness is incomparable to Ciel’s. [346] Finally, Ciel tells the entire household to make preparations to leave—further instructions will come later. When they exit the room, Ciel tells Sebastian to make more tea so he can really wake up and discuss all the details with him. [347]

Sebastian and Ciel then visit Sullivan. When she finds them outside her window, she’s shocked. [348] Ciel responds that there’s no reason for her to be surprised since she herself is a witch. [349] He adds that he wanted to thank her before leaving; he just wanted to offer her a chance to go to the outside world. [350] Although she hesitates, she accepts when Ciel calls her his “friend” [351] Furthermore, Sebastian adds that she’ll have to enter society as a debutante. [352] Then they both take her hand[353] and lead her to the underground chamber where the magic circle is. Although she’s surprised, they insist that this is the entrance to the outside world. When Sebastian opens the entrance underneath the magic circle, Sullivan is shocked. He states that a “snake” told him about it; [354] she asks then questions if he’s a warlock, but he answers that he’s just one hell of a butler. [355]

Ciel then asks her about the duties of the Green Witch; she explains her family’s duties. [356] Sebastian next places his hand on the altar; she warns him he’ll suffer misfortune if he does that. However, Sebastian easily pulls a lever to reveal an elevator-style door. Sebastian carries an astounded Sullivan as they travel downwards. When the elevator doors open, they find a room full of monitors and radar equipment. [357] The “dots” represent the location of every villager. Sebastian explains that the “amulets” that everyone is wearing as werewolf protection are actually some kind of transmitter. [358] They can’t believe that the villagers managed to use such an advanced trick. At the same time, Sullivan’s horror continues to grow.

Suddenly, Sebastian hears someone coming, and they hide. [359] Entering another room, they find it full of giant cylinders. When they finally find a hiding spot, they witness some “werewolves” and humans talking. Unable to take anymore, Sullivan bursts out and accuses them of deceiving her. Amongst the confusion that follows, Sebastian reveals that the “werewolves” are people in costumes. [360] Furthermore, the “miasma” is actually a chemical weapon made in this factory.

Sebastian continues to guard Ciel and Sullivan while Sullivan’s “mother” reveals the truth. [361] As Sullivan screams in agony, Wolfram rushes at Sebastian; Sebastian easily knocks him aside. Comforting Sullivan, Ciel declares that children are not “tools”; he can’t believe a mother would ruin her child’s feet just for a chemical formula. [362] Ciel suddenly fires a shot in the air, grabs Sullivan, and heads for the elevator. As the doors close, he orders Sebastian to take care of them. [363]

Sebastian deals with the “werewolves”. [364] He states this is their reward for exposing his master to the mustard gas. [365] They try to fight him by releasing the gas, but it has no affect on Sebastian. When Sebastian sets the room on fire, he recalls Ciel’s orders. [366] As he helped Ciel dress, he asked what method he should use to destroy their enemies. Ciel confidently stated he won’t be around, and there won’t be any survivors—Sebastian is allowed to go crazy like a beast. Presently, Sebastian remarks that he’ll act the way Ciel desires, simply because he’s one hell of a butler. [367] After he’s done with them, he looks at his pocket watch—he comments that if he doesn’t hurry, breakfast will be late. [368]

Sebastian luckily arrives in time to save Ciel from the cannon fire. Ciel immediately scolds him for being late. Sebastian states that he has all the gas’ samples. [369] Ciel tells Baldroy and Snake to help the others get to the train. He also hands the case to Snake. Finally, he states he and Sebastian will take care of the Panzer.

As the tank comes toward them, Sebastian holds Ciel in one arm since he forgot to bring an extra pair of shoes. He slyly adds that Ciel looks so petite in his dress-completely resembling the Green Witch. Ciel orders Sebastian to destroy the Panzer. [370] Sebastian uses physical strength, Baldroy’s “special supplies”, and Ciel’s guidance to completely destroy it. When it is in flames, Ciel comments that it is now a moving oven; Sebastian agrees wholeheartedly. [371]

Ciel suddenly sees two, German Shinigami. They are shocked that he can see them. Sascha thinks that it may be because Ciel himself is close to death or because of his lineage. Nevertheless, they take their leave and disappear. [372]

Sebastian and Ciel arrive in the nick of time to save the household from the German female officer. Plunging his knife into her throat, Sebastian states some food escaped from the oven. [373] Ciel orders Sebastian to rescue Wolfram. Mey-Rin and Sebastian help Sullivan with his treatment. When he comes to, Sebastian tells him a butler is not allowed to dies before his master—his senior, Tanaka, told him that. [374] Ciel tells Diedrich they need a place to hide. Diedrich tells him they are heading there right now. Sebastian asks Ciel why he asked him to save Wolfram. Ciel answers he needed Wolfram to look after Sullivan; she is his insurance. [375] Sebastian smiles and asks why Ciel needs “insurance” when he has him. Ciel responds that Sebastian is the least trustworthy of all. [376]

The entire group then arrives at Diedrich’s castle. Later, Sebastian helps Ciel with his bath. [377] They discuss the case; Sebastian concludes that the German’s technology is now in England’s hands. He is amazed by how fast humans can change. He adds teasingly, though, that Ciel still does not grow taller at all. [378] Piqued, Ciel replies he doesn’t need to hear that from a demon who hasn’t changed in centuries.

Ciel and Sebastian then talk with Diedrich. He tells them that Undertaker came to visit him and then left for France. He said that “Earl Phantomhive is still with us”, shocking Ciel and Sebastian since they cannot determine which Earl he was referring to. Diedrich responds that Undertaker is always talking nonsense, so he doesn’t pay much attention to him. [379]

Ciel and Sullivan then sit down to dinner. Seeing her deplorable manners, Sebastian states he can’t wait to teach her. Finally, Ciel and Sebastian talk with Wolfram. He asks Sebastian why he saved him, and Sebastian responds because his Master asked him to. [380] Ciel adds that it was extremely irresponsible of Wolfram to leave Sullivan with complete strangers. [381] They’ll both accompany them to England.

Wolfram and Sullivan are disguised on their journey to England. [382] Before Ciel leaves, Diedrich tells him to be careful. When the group arrives in London, Sebastian asks Wolfram to refrain from speaking in German because it will draw unwanted attention. They leave the servants (who head for the mansion) and proceed to Nina Hopkins’s establishment to procure a wardrobe for Sullivan’s meeting with the Queen. After the little adventure there, Ciel and Sebastian return with Sullivan and Wolfram to the mansion. Agni and Soma [383] greet them. After a whole day of fun, lightheartedness, and more misunderstandings (mainly between Ciel and Elizabeth), Ciel finally retires for the day.

Blue Cult Arc

The night before Sieglinde Sullivan's expected audience with Queen Victoria, Sieglinde and Wolfram Gelzer talk with Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian in the Phantomhive Manor. Much to Sieglinde's and Wolfram's surprise, Ciel orders her to give the Queen the process to make mustard gas. Wolfram is worried that Sieglinde will be exploited again, as she was by the German military, but Sebastian points out that it is, truly, Sieglinde's choice whether or not she is used or uses others; he adds that Sieglinde is, after all, an extraordinary genius who possesses information that could afford her personal treatment on an international scale. Ciel also states that, because he is Sieglinde's friend, he knows she will never stop studying, but in order to gain new knowledge, she will need a lot of money, which Queen Victoria can provide if Sieglinde works under her. Ciel goes on to say that all Sieglinde has is her intellect and information on mustard gas. Furthermore, he forbids her from speaking about the SuLIN gas. Sieglinde is shocked, and Sebastian explains that mustard gas does not compare to the SuLIN gas in terms of lethality, and thus, if employed in England, countless deaths will result. Sieglinde vows to always keep SuLIN a secret. Ciel reminds her to consider everyone, including him, as an adversary who is trying to use her, and he encourages her to use everyone else in order to obtain the future she desires.[384]

The following day outside Buckingham Palace, Sebastian, Ciel, Sieglinde, and Wolfram meet Charles Grey and Charles Phipps who offer to lead them into the palace. While the other three follow the pair, Sebastian remains by the carriage. Grey asks if he is coming with them, and Sebastian replies that he cannot since he has an errand to run for Ciel.[385] At Ciel's behest, Sebastian heads to the ocean, swims deep in it, and tosses the suitcase of SuLIN samples into a chasm.[386] Afterward, he reunites with Ciel, Sieglinde, and Wolfram outside the palace and assures Ciel that he has done as ordered. Ciel tells him that he is exhausted and wishes to hurry home to sleep. He, then, stares at Sebastian for a while, much to Sebastian's confusion, but Ciel does not explain himself when questioned by him.[387]

The next morning, Sebastian notices that Ciel is agitated while sleeping and is about to wake him, but Ciel jolts awake, simultaneously grabbing Sebastian's wrist. Ciel claims that he is fine, however, and releases him. Sebastian, then, hands him a cup of tea.[388]

One morning, while Ciel is in his office, Sebastian comes in with a letter from Queen Victoria; it explains in detail about a new case involving the Sphere Music Hall that she wants Ciel to investigate.[389]

Abruptly, a greatly dismayed Edward Midford rushes in, shouting Ciel's name. Surprised, Ciel comments that Edward looks pale. Edward, then, reveals that Elizabeth Midford has run away from the Midford Manor, shocking Sebastian and Ciel.[390]

Sebastian advises him to calm down and explain the situation. Once Edward and Ciel are seated, the former informs him about a certain meeting Herman Greenhill introduced him to a month ago; he took Elizabeth along to one of them, at her insistence, and she got her fortune told by Blavat; afterward, she attended the meeting on a regular basis, infatuated with the place, and ultimately stopped coming home.[391]

Edward and Ciel simultaneously state that the meeting is held at the Sphere Music Hall. Edward is surprised that Ciel knows the name. Both Ciel and Sebastian remark on Queen Victoria's "fearsome" powers of observation, and the former explains to Edward that the Queen has requested him to investigate the music hall. When Ciel says that their priority is locating Elizabeth, Edward tells him that he can see Elizabeth if he goes to the music hall: Edward had gone to the meetings a few times and attempted to convince her to return home, but each time, Elizabeth refused, claiming that her "radiance" lies here at the music hall. Ciel declares that they will have to witness it for themselves and orders Sebastian to prepare a carriage for them.[392]

After Ciel, Sebastian, and Edward arrive at the Sphere Music Hall, Edward points out the absence of Elizabeth, Herman, Edgar Redmond, Lawrence Bluewer, and Gregory Violet. Two young woman approach Sebastian, asking if it is his first time here. Sebastian affirms that it is, claiming that he came after hearing how festive the place is, and he inquires about the purpose of the activities there. They say that the place is not formal enough to have an established purpose and that they usually just converse and share advice; fundamentally, they purify themselves so that they can live each day with a positive outlook and that they go there to "pass this radiant time in one another's company." After extolling the place some more, they wave goodbye to Sebastian, and he perceives strange bracelets around their wrists. Ciel says that the environment is unsettling, to which Sebastian agrees. A dismayed Sebastian remarks that desires, like hatred and envy, do not exist on the faces of those gathered there, and because the people there are lacking desire, which he deems essential to the charm of mankind, the place is "unbearably dull."[393]

Edward shows them who Blavat is. Ciel proposes that they get their fortunes told, quipping that Blavat would be no fraud if he can "divine the sorrows" of a demon, to which Sebastian responds that aside from the selfishness of his master, which is his primary concern, his mind is free of worries. After Blavat finishes with a customer, Sebastian steps up and requests for his fortune to be told. Blavat is startled when he sees Sebastian and Ciel, and then he tells Sebastian to sit down, while Ciel notes that the air has shifted.[394]

Sebastian asks for Blavat's needle so that he can prick his fingertip, which is a required procedure for one to get one's fortune told. Blavat maintains that that will not be necessary since Sebastian does not have the divine protection of any star, something he says he can deduce merely by the sight of Sebastian. He yanks Sebastian toward him and whispers in his ear that Sebastian is not human, shocking Sebastian and Ciel.[395]

Afterwards, Blavat laughs, stating that, now, Sebastian and Ciel must be assuming that he is not human either. When Sebastian asks why Blavat thinks he is not human, Blavat asserts that he can tell that much simply by looking; he describes Sebastian as a darkness that "swallows up the radiance of stars shining with all their might"; stars drawn to him will "stray from their orbits to wander the murk for all eternity," because he is like a collapsar. The aroused crowd begin demanding that Sebastian leave immediately. Blavat silences them with a flick of his wrist, and he then urges Sebastian to depart from the place for he has frightened the stars. On cue, two men grab Sebastian; Sebastian secretly steals one of their bracelets[396] as they escort him out of the music hall.[397]

Subsequently, Sebastian is tossed outside. The two men tell him that he is not welcome because he is without the divine protection of a star. After they leave, Sebastian contemplates the anomalies of the place and is shocked when he senses a certain presence. To his delight, he sees a cat. He embraces it, extolling its features, and affirms that if Ciel were not allergic to cats, he would have gladly kept a cat of his own at the Phantomhive Manor. The cat finds the bracelet Sebastian has stolen from one of the men, and he says that the bracelet is not for the cat to eat. He then comments that Ciel will be in the music hall for some time yet; having already anticipated that, he says that he has smoked salmon ready in the carriage and requests that the cat stays with him for a little while.[398]

After the cat leaves him,[399] Sebastian drops by a tavern, where he is approached by a prostitute, who offers to pour his drink for him. Sebastian thanks her, disclosing that he was just rejected by a great beauty, alluding to the cat. She then makes the offer to comfort him, saying that she will even cut him a deal. Sebastian states that he feels like talking to someone and volunteers to treat her with food, to her joy. She looks at the menu, admits that she cannot read, and asks if he can.[400]

Soon after, while the prostitute is eating, Sebastian shows her a bracelet, and she reveals that a friend of hers was wearing a similar one and that a lot of her customers had one, too. She says that she asked her friend why she did not sell it, since she is penniless, and her friend said that there is a room with all "kinds of fun events" that one cannot get into without a bracelet. She remarks that it sounded too good to be true for her, since nothing that tempting is free.[401]

Later, another prostitute joins them, and Sebastian hears a popular song originating from the Sphere Music Hall from them. Subsequently, the three of them head over to the music hall, where Sebastian welcomes Ciel back. Ciel and Edward turn around, and are dumbfounded when they see him with two prostitutes. A flustered Edward scolds Sebastian for having them accompany him, saying that he is still on the job. The women soon leave.[402]

At Ciel's townhouse, Sebastian accommodates Ciel and Edward with tea, while details of the event that transpired at the music hall are relayed to him. When Edward describes the song he heard there as the kind where one would start humming without realizing it, Sebastian sings and dances to a verse, baffling Ciel and Edward. Edward asks if Sebastian had slipped back into the hall, Sebastian responds the negative and is about to explain, but is interrupted by Agni and Soma Asman Kadar, who offer them sandesh.[403]

When Soma asks if the song Sebastian sang is "all the rage" in England, for he hears it sung quite often by kids when he goes out to the market with Agni, Ciel concludes that Sebastian has heard the song from the prostitutes, and Sebastian confesses that that is the case; the woman who sang it to him has heard it from another woman in the same line of work. When Edward questions this, Sebastian explains that literacy in the lower classes of England is still very low, and thus, word of mouth is the most effective method to spread information; furthermore, the best way of making something stick with people by word of mouth is through a song, for words put in a repeating rhythm are much easier to remember than those spoken, which is why hymns and folk songs are used to convey religious teachings and moral lessons.[404]

After both Edward and Ciel make inferences from what Sebastian told them, Sebastian pulls out a bracelet, saying that he took it from one of the men who kicked him out of the music hall and that he was querying people in town about it, when the prostitute from earlier recognized it. He narrates his conversation with her to them, informing them that while the Saturday meetings are open to anyone, there are closed events that only those who have had their fortunes told can attend.[405]

Sebastian accompanies Ciel for a brief visit to Buckingham Palace, where the latter gives a report to Queen Victoria about the Sphere Music Hall. Later, at Ciel's townhouse, he tells Ciel that closed meetings for those with different bracelets are held on different days of the week at the Sphere Music Hall. Bracelet owners can attend the meeting according to their sign on their specific days—Polaris on Mondays and Wednesdays, Vega on Tuesdays, Canopus on Thursdays, and Sirius on Fridays. He mentions that the next day is a Friday, meaning Ciel, who is protected by Sirius, can attend the event. Sebastian suggests attending the meeting as well, but Ciel says that they may know exactly who is protected by Sirius, and is against the idea. Sebastian agrees, and says he will wait outside and that Ciel can summon him if he wishes.[406]

After some time, Sebastian, who is outside the music hall playing with a cat, suddenly realizes that he can barely sense Ciel, and wonders whether he is asleep. He thens says that Ciel's attempt at being entrapped is going well, and decides to wait outside until he is summoned. He is approached by Fred Abberline from Scotland Yard, who recognizes him as the Earl Phantomhive's butler. Fred mentions a string of strange corpses showing up; the corpses have no external wounds and seem to be simply asleep; the identified corpses were of a prostitute, a postman, and a shoemaker's assistant; however, a corpse of a peer's daughter soon appeared as well, and thus, Scotland Yard has been working hard to solve the case. To Fred's chagrin, an amused Sebastian comments that the corpses were dismissed as ordinary unnatural deaths, until a member of the privileged classes was found in the same state—that was when Scotland Yard began to deem it an actual case. Fred says that Ciel should cooperate with the Yard if he has any information. Sebastian questions this, wondering whether Arthur Randall would be displeased, to which Fred says that he would take the reprimand if it means closing the case as soon as possible, especially since Ciel's aim and that of the Yard is to protect the people. Sebastian says that he will convey the message to Ciel. Fred tells him to meet with him in person, if he needs to get in touch with him, and then leaves, while Sebastian reflects on the corpses.[407]

Later, he enters a forest, digs up the earth at a certain spot, and finds an abundance of corpses. Sebastian agrees with Fred's previous statement, remarking that the corpses are indeed "far too lovely."[408]

Outside Sphere Music Hall, Sebastian welcomes Ciel. He notices that Ciel is carrying a lot of sweets, and the latter explains that Gregory Violet forced them on him. They climb into a carriage, where Ciel talks about how he fell asleep due to a drug of sorts but emerged unscathed like the others. Sebastian, then, informs Ciel about his encounter with Fred Abberline, the unusual corpses, and how Fred requests for Ciel's cooperation. Ciel finds it amusing that Scotland Yard would be willing to associate with the "evil Earl Phantomhive." Sebastian says that Fred stated that, while their methods may be different, they share the goal of protecting people.[409]

When Ciel says that he needs more information on the corpses, Sebastian pulls out a map, revealing that he discovered eighteen corpses, five of which buried in Epping Forest, east of London; after careful investigation, Sebastian came to the conclusion that the corpses have nothing to common. When Ciel orders Sebastian to collect the bodies and get someone to look at them, Sebastian asks Ciel who he wants to perform the autopsies, thereby reminding Ciel of Undertaker. Ciel, then, decides to have Fred study the corpses.[410]

Suddenly, Sebastian smells blood on Ciel and tears off Ciel's shirt, exposing needle marks, to his and Ciel's horror. Sebastian apologizes for his carelessness and carries him to the manor where Sieglinde and Wolfram reside, to have him treated. When Sebastian knocks on the door, Wolfram, not knowing it is Sebastian, barks at him, but quickly discovers that Sebastian and Ciel are the visitors. Sebastian tells Wolfram that Sieglinde must examine Ciel. At this juncture, Sieglinde emerges, strapped on her new invention: "Arachne Patousa," which are spider legs that enable her to walk. Sebastian informs Sieglinde about the possibility of Ciel being drugged, and she leads them into a room filled with contraptions. Sieglinde discloses that Queen Victoria supplied the items and that she, Grey, and Phipps visit from time to time with cake.[411]

Subsequently, Sieglinde inspects his person and deduces that he is not poisoned. Wolfram has an idea but struggles to convey it in English, and so Sebastian tells him to speak in German. Wolfram, then, makes the conjecture that Ciel became anaemic because his blood was taken from him rather than something being injected in him. He adds that his blood being drawn may be for blood transfusion. Sebastian asserts that the attendees are unwittingly paying for their food and entertainment at special events with their blood.[412]

Ciel states that he knows for certain that the meetings are a menace and that Elizabeth is there. When Sieglinde asks him what he will do, Ciel admits that Elizabeth and the other participants will not listen to reason, and Sebastian agrees, saying that they are all thoroughly under the spell. Ciel decides that to wake them up, he must have decisive proof of the crimes, and tells Sebastian to follow him, determined to expose the music hall's "foul scheme."[413]

In Ciel's townhouse, Fred informs Sebastian and Ciel the corpses died due to severe blood loss. Sebastian and Ciel conclude that the Sphere Music Hall is bleeding their guests to death and that they may also be conducting experiments in blood transfusion. When Fred declares that he will have them immediately arrested, Ciel has Sebastian show Fred the list of people who regularly attend the Sphere Music Hall gatherings—among them are members of the military, the House of Lords, and Scotland Yard, who must be lending financial support to the music hall, so if Fred were to act openly, the individuals in power may not only hush up the investigation, but they may fail to catch the true mastermind, as well. Ciel, then, shoots down Fred's idea to request aid from Queen Victoria, and assures him that he will handle it, as the Queen's Watchdog.[414]

In a carriage parked outside the Sphere Music Hall, Ciel observes that the quickest method would be to infiltrate the inner circle, prompting Sebastian to point out that, as long as Blavat Sky is present, they may be exposed. Ciel, then, suggests bribing the tradesmen who enter and leave the building daily, but admits that Blavat will be the first to hear about it if negotiations fail.[415]

When a couple of tradesmen accidentally drop a box, Nina Hopkins scolds them. Both Sebastian and Ciel are surprised by her appearance.[416]

After Ciel convinces Nina to let him escort her home, Nina explains in detail her association with Blavat and the music hall, and also admits that she never met "those with the names of stars," who are of higher status than the S4. When Ciel requests that she brings Sebastian with her the next time she returns to the music hall, she flatly refuses to, in fear that Sebastian's "outdated grab" will tarnish her reputation. Ciel, then, grants her permission to choose Sebastian's clothes, to Sebastian's dismay.[417]

At Hopkins' Tailor Shop, Nina forces Sebastian to change in and out of several outfits, to Ciel's amusement. Sebastian tells Ciel that he can slip in the music hall without Nina's assistance, but Ciel insists that he accompanies her.[418]

The following week, Sebastian, attired in clothes Nina has deemed fitting, travels with Nina and her assistants to the music hall. At the entrance, they greet the worker, and once they enter, Nina shows Sebastian where the four doors are. Afterward, they part ways, with Sebastian leaving Blavat to her to distract.[419]

After entering the room for special event attendees, Sebastian passes through double doors at the back and arrives at a check-patterned hallway, where he detects a strange smell. The moment he sets foot on the hallway, however, Elizabeth Midford attacks him.[420]

Sebastian and Elizabeth battle, with the former attempting to persuade the latter to go home, but to no avail. He muses that he can "make quick work" of her were she not Ciel's fiancée, and asks her why she does this even though she has always wanted to see Ciel smile, to which she asserts that she does not know. They continue fighting, and Elizabeth shatters the glass window behind Sebastian. In subsequence, Sebastian says that her strength is admirable for a human, and delivers a blow to her chest. As a result, she faints. Sebastian inspects her and is relieved to find that her bones are not broken, remarking that humans are frailer than he expected.[421]

Sebastian, then, leaves her on the ground with his coat, and enters a facility where blood transfusion experiments have been carried out. He opens a cabinet and discovers bottles of blood sorted by the names of the stars. He takes some with him, investigates further, and locate the rooms of those said to be embodiments of the four guardian stars. Said four are not in their respective rooms, however, which prompts Sebastian to contemplate the situation: He can easily destroy Sphere Music Hall and kill Blavat and the others, but that would not be enough to quell the fervor of those who frequent the music hall. He, then, decides to report back to Ciel, and picks up Elizabeth.[422]

Before arriving at the townhouse, Sebastian visits Sieglinde and Wolfram at their house and hands an excited Sieglinde the bottles of blood to research.[423]

Outside Ciel's townhouse, Sebastian corrects the way he is holding Elizabeth, in fear that Ciel will scold him, and then goes in to where Ciel and Edward are. While Edward monitors an unconscious Elizabeth in a bedroom, Sebastian informs Ciel about his entrusting the blood he obtained from the facility to Sieglinde, and adds that he was not able to meet the four with the names of stars. At this juncture, Edward enters the room, questioning why Sebastian came back when he saw evidence of unlawful blood transfusion experiments. Sebastian explains that there is no point in destroying the music hall, as it is merely a symbol, and that the S4 and Blavat are "charismatic celebrities" to the populace of London; therefore, their crushing the music hall and the celebrities can possibly intensify the zeal of the people, and will overall be a disservice. After Edward asks if there is nothing they can do, Sebastian, sensing Elizabeth fleeing the townhouse, comments on the "irksome" nature of human hearts.[424]

A panic-stricken Agni rushes to Sebastian, Ciel, and Edward and informs them of Elizabeth's disappearance. They go up to the bedroom where she was sleeping, and Agni explains that he went to check up on her, but she was gone when he arrived. Ciel deduces that Sebastian knew about her escape; the latter affirms this, insinuating that Ciel would not have thought of anything effective to keep her there, had they detained her; Sphere Music Hall still controls her. While Ciel and Edward discusses Elizabeth, Sebastian considers what Elizabeth has told him before.[425]

The doorbell sounds, and Agni leaves to get the door. They, then, hear a commotion downstairs and discover that Soma and Agni are feeding a multitude of poor children. Sebastian observes that the "street urchins" from other parts of London are also present. Ciel soon comes to a realization and thanks Soma and Agni.[426]

Afterward, Ciel gives Sebastian two weeks to invest in the abandoned theatre across the street from Sphere Music Hall, remodel it into Funtom Music Hall, and make preparations for the grand opening; they also establish the Phantom Five, a group that will rival Sphere Music Hall's Starlight Four, consisting of Soma, Edward, Cheslock, Clayton, and Joanne Harcourt. While Ciel works on recruiting Edward, Sebastian heads to Weston College, disguised as Professor Michaelis, to recruit the others. He visits Joanne first, explains to him the circumstances regarding Edgar, Herman, Lawrence, and Gregory, and asks him to join the Phantom Five; Joanne agrees, since Sebastian helped him in the past. Afterward, Sebastian recruits Cheslock, Clayton, and Soma, as well.[427]

Subsequently, the recruited five assemble at Ciel's office at the London townhouse. When Cheslock questions their choice of Clayton, Sebastian asserts that he can be a star, and modifies his appearance by combing his hair and removing his glasses; they are all impressed with the result. On Ciel's order, Sebastian passes out a folder to each of the five, which details what role they must assume on stage. All except Cheslock is given a description; Cheslock is told to be himself. Sebastian explains, to Cheslock's indignation, that no ordinary person would attend one of the most prestigious public schools in Great Britain with his kind of hair and makeup. When Edward asks how to be "a little naughty and aggressive," Sebastian, on Ciel's command, demonstrates it on Edward by cornering him against the wall, stroking his chin, and dropping a suggestive comment. Sebastian, then, informs a flustered Edward that, according to their recent street surveys, women are favorably disposed to men who are "somewhat forceful." Edward tells Sebastian that he is hesitant about speaking crudely to women, to which Sebastian responds by saying that his "good breeding" is manifest. When Ciel insists that they increase their marketability, Sebastian, in a menacing fashion, maintains that he will train them thoroughly, to the Phantom Five's discomfort. They, then, refine their speech, mannerisms, singing, dancing, and skills through rigorous lessons under Sebastian's guidance.[428]

At night, Sebastian delivers tea to Ciel, and gives his report: Soma is exceptionally talented, for he is not shy and picks up the dancing after being shown the steps only once. Ciel comments in spite of his mental immaturity, Soma is quite capable in almost every area. Sebastian adds that Edward, out of sincere respect for his superiors, is also quickly learning things. After Ciel hands Sebastian a paper which contains all of the new crowd-pleasers he has devised for opening night, he asks him about the blood research; Sebastian replies that he has yet to hear from Sieglinde.[429]

Following the eventful two weeks, the Phantom Five head to Sphere Music Hall to direct its attendees to Funtom Music Hall, while Sebastian stays in the new venue's office with Ciel.[430]

Sebastian complains about the limited span of time Ciel gave him to make preparations, to Ciel's amusement, and adds that establishing an imitation across the street from the original is "terribly cheeky and wicked" of Ciel. Ciel asserts that Funtom Corporation's operation of a theatre is natural, since it is in the entertainment business. He, then, declares that he will school Blavat and the others on "the art of the finest entertainment money can buy," with his Funtom Music Hall.[431]

Afterward, the Phantom Five gather at Ciel's office, where Ciel commends them for their performance. As per Clayton's request, Sebastian returns his glasses to him, while reminding him to remove them before going on stage in the future.[432]

Later, Sebastian informs Ciel that he must make preparations for the Phantomhive earldom's Halloween celebration. Ciel is reluctant to comply, prompting Sebastian to remind him of how important Halloween is to the tenants on Phantomhive land. In consequence, Ciel orders Sebastian to return to Phantomhive Manor and commence the preparations.[433]

At Phantomhive Manor, Sebastian gathers Baldroy, Mey-Rin, Finnian, Snake, and Tanaka, and gives each of them instructions, save Tanaka, who is told to remain as is. Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Tanaka share details on the American, Chinese, and Japanese Halloween traditions, respectively, which inspires Sebastian.[434]

On Halloween, Sebastian welcomes Ciel home, shows him the extravagantly decorated garden, and has him change into a costume. He, then, explains to Ciel that they have combined various Halloweens from around the world so that their tenants can have quality entertainment.[435]

Subsequently, Sebastian brings Ciel and the other guests to a river, where they are given lanterns. Sebastian has Ciel light everyone's lanterns, which the latter does via a candle. The lanterns are, then, set afloat into the river. Sebastian compares candles and their flame to humans, calling them beautiful. When Ciel advises him to handle them with caution, as, when provoked, they can be formidable, Sebastian assures him that he will strive to keep Ciel's flame alive, for he is a devil of a butler.[436]

At Ciel's office in Funtom Music Hall, Sebastian watches as Ciel tells the Phantom Five that they must perform well.[437]

After a Phantom Five performance, Sebastian accompanies Ciel as the latter comes down the stairs in Funtom Music Hall. They spot Blavat among the crowd, and Ciel greets him.[438]

Ciel and Blavat converse, with the latter deliberately provoking Ciel by mentioning Elizabeth. After Blavat leaves, Ciel angrily breaks a Meissen vase, to which Sebastian responds by saying that the outburst of rage is futile and uncharacteristic of him.[439]

Both the Starlight Four and the Phantom Five continue with their respective shows. At one point, Sebastian reports to Ciel that they have drawn about twenty percent of Sphere's attendees to their music hall.[440]

At Epping Forest, Sebastian and Pitt, a freelance reporter, approach two of Sphere Music Hall's employees, who are in the process of burying a woman. Sebastian reveals that they know that the corpses, which have been popping up around London, are coming from Sphere Music Hall and that Sphere has been using the Starlight Four to attract people and harvest their blood. He adds that Ciel has surmised that Sphere Music Hall constantly needs more blood, and that the true intent of Funtom Music Hall is to steal enough of Sphere's audience so that Sphere would have no choice but draw more blood from their current audience members, and, in turn, more deaths from blood loss would occur. From there, all Sebastian has to do is wait at the burial site and catch Sphere Music Hall in the act of burying their corpses.[441]

Sebastian asserts that, from the beginning, the rivalry between the Starlight Four and the Phantom Five was simply there so that they can mask their true intentions, and admits that none of the Phantom Five members are aware of this. The two men attempt to shoot Sebastian and Pitt, but Sebastian stops the bullets with pieces of cutlery. He, then, appears behind them and kicks the backs of their heads, causing them to fall into the hole with the corpse.[442]

Sebastian suggests that they put their best face forward, as not many get to grace the front page of a newspaper. Both Sebastian and Pitt tell them to "watch the birdie," and the latter snaps a picture of them.[443]

At Phantomhive Manor, Sebastian, Ciel, Soma, and Pitt have convened. Pitt compliments the afternoon tea and pudding, and Sebastian thanks him. Pitt, then, inquires after Tanaka, and Sebastian assures him that he is the same as always. When Pitt attempts to show a photograph of Ciel's family, Ciel snatches it from him and admonishes him, while Sebastian observes.[444]

Afterward, Agni enters the room with Fred, who tells Ciel that he needs to speak to him. Consequently, Sebastian asks Pitt and Soma to leave, and they comply. Once they are gone, Fred shows them the newspaper with Sphere Music Hall in the headlines. Ciel and Sebastian, then, explain the treacherous workings of Sphere Music Hall, and their plan to steal the music hall's source of supply. Fred is appalled that they would indirectly induce the deaths of Sirius individuals, deeming it a "heartless method." Ciel retorts that he, the Aristocrat of Evil, took action when Fred, the "righteous police," could not. When Fred vows to solve the case next time without getting Ciel's hands dirty, an amused Ciel urges him to quickly get promoted.[445]

Later, Sebastian announces that Ciel's carriage is ready. While going down a hallway, Sebastian and Ciel are approached by Agni, who asks Ciel to stop involving Soma in dangerous matters. Ciel states that he will stop putting them both to use, and that he has never considered Soma a friend. While passing by Agni, Sebastian calls him the "very epitome of a butler."[446]

Afterward, Ciel and Sebastian, who gives them plates of food, confront Herman, Edgar, and Lawrence, who are hiding at a pub in Hyde Park. Ciel presses them for the whereabouts of Blavat and Elizabeth, and learns that they were not aware that Elizabeth was at Sphere Music Hall in the first place, nor were they aware of the blood transfusions. When Herman mentions Gregory's disappearance, which occurred on the day the Sphere Music Hall scoop was published, Sebastian says that Gregory has Sirius blood, and that it is likely Blavat took him along to continue taking blood from him.[447]

When Ciel asks them if they have an idea where Blavat went, Edgar recalls that Blavat talked about a second music hall being built, and Lawrence declares that it is in Bath. Sebastian and Ciel head out.[448]

At Bath, Sebastian and Ciel ask a couple of residents for the location of a music hall under construction, and they point the way.[449]

Subsequently, Sebastian and Ciel enter the aforementioned music hall, and descend hidden stairs to reach the room where Blavat had taken blood from the men. Sebastian recognizes military elite and prominent members of the House of Lords, and Ciel says that they were on Grey's list.[450]

They find Gregory, and wake him. When questioned by Sebastian, Gregory admits that he did not want his friends to be sad, and, therefore, he went along with Blavat's plans. He also admits, while crying, that he had invited Cheslock and the others to Sphere Music Hall, in hopes that word might eventually reach Ciel, so that Ciel would come and end it all, because he could not bring himself to do it. When Ciel asks him where Blavat is, he says that Blavat has gone back to London, and then faints.[451]

Ciel orders Sebastian to bring Gregory to a hospital immediately, but Grell and Othello arrive; both Grim Reapers assert that Gregory will be fine, since he is not on the soul retrieval list. Othello takes note of Sebastian, and gathers samples from Ciel. When Grell tells Sebastian that he should ask them out on a date, Sebastian and Ciel pointedly disregard them.[452]

Othello discloses that the men there suffered from renal failure, and that the machines function to replace their thickened blood with fresh blood; in doing so, the men's lifespans were extended. He affirms that entries in the soul retrieval list may be revised every once in a while, especially when there are external factors, such as a demon, interfering with the affairs of humans. He says that while the people who summon demons are usually ordinary, sometimes a brilliant inventor is among them, which would explain the machines. Sebastian and Ciel, then, leave for London to track down Blavat.[453]

Ciel tells Sebastian to inform Fred, Grey, and Phipps about the Bath music hall and Gregory's whereabouts. They puzzle over why Blavat has returned to London, despite the risk of being apprehended. When Ciel mentions Elizabeth, Sebastian reveals that, during their previous encounter, she has said, "I, and only I, simply can't go back over there." While Sebastian prepares the carriage, Ciel muses on Elizabeth's cryptic words. He, then, states that they should return to the townhouse for the time being, assures Ciel that he will report to Fred and continue the investigation, and prepares the carriage.[454]

Later, Ciel and Sebastian arrive at the townhouse, where Sebastian notices that something is amiss. They enter the house, and are astonished to find blood and rubble. They follow the trail of blood, and find Agni at the door, with a multitude of knives in his back. After examining Agni, Sebastian reports to Ciel that he is not breathing, to Ciel's shock. Sebastian is, then, forced to break open the door, where he discovers Soma sobbing.[455]

Sebastian sets Agni down, and states that, for prioritizing Soma's safety and happiness, Agni is "the very epitome of a butler."[456]

When Ciel asks Soma if he is hurt, Soma hits him across the face. After rendering Soma unconscious, Sebastian comments that Soma is understandably confused. After a distraught Ciel composes himself, he asserts that he wants an assessment of the situation. Sebastian deduces that something unexpected must have happened, since five or ten average humans would not have been able to kill Agni, and that Agni's body is still warm, which means that the attack was recent.[457]

Ciel suggests that they do a sweep of the place. They note that Agni must have been topping up the coal in the hearth, and that none of the rooms have been burglarized. Subsequently, they hear a strange noise coming from Ciel's room, and enter it.[458]

To their shock, the words "Who stole the candy from my tummy?" are engraved on the wall. After inferring that the message came from the intruder and that the words appear to be unrelated to Blavat, Sebastian notices that Ciel is deeply agitated. Instead of addressing the issue, Ciel orders Sebastian to have Sieglinde tend to Soma's injuries.[459]

When Sebastian lifts Soma, Ciel spots pieces of a photo falling from his hand. Upon realizing what they are, Ciel asks Sebastian for confirmation that he would never lie to him. Sebastian assures him that he does not tell lies, and Ciel is horrified.[460]

Sebastian and Ciel drop off Soma at Sieglinde's place for her to tend to his injuries. Ciel warns Sieglinde to not carelessly open the door for anyone, even if it is him. Afterward, Sebastian and Ciel decide to head to Phantomhive Manor, as Ciel wants to be "certain" about a matter.[461]

Later, Sebastian and Ciel enter Phantomhive Manor, where Mey-Rin, Baldroy, Finnian, and Snake greet Ciel. Ciel is confused when Baldroy asks him why he went out "again" in the rain.[462]

At that moment, "Ciel" descends the stairs, to their collective shock. He scolds a dismayed Ciel for getting drenched, and assures him that he will never leave his side again, and that he has come home. When Finnian states that it is impossible for there to be two Ciels, "Ciel" asserts that he is real. Finnian adds that he knew something was wrong when "Ciel" came home, and calls him an impostor. Amused, "Ciel" declares that the head of the Phantomhive house, Ciel Phantomhive, is actually he.[463]

"Ciel" muses that this is the first time he has actually met Sebastian. He promptly asks him how dare he "do that" to him on "that day". Sebastian affirms "Ciel's" statement that he is "Earl Ciel Phantomhive", to the servants' disbelief.[464]

He looks on as Ciel mutters that he is "the spare" to "Ciel Phantomhive", heir to Earl Phantomhive.[465]

Quotes

  • "I am the butler of the Phantomhive family. It goes without saying that I can manage something like this."[467]
  • "I am one hell of a butler. So long as the young master possesses the 'mark of the covenant' . . . I am his faithful dog. A 'sacrifice' . . . a 'wish' . . . and a 'covenant' bind me to my master.[468]
  • "Young master. Forgive me. As butler of the Phantomhive Family, this is an unpardonable disgrace . . . I do not know how I should atone for this . . . I have been unable to prepare dinner this evening."[469]
  • "A butler begins his day early. He is the last to finish his work late at night, and the first to begin work in the morning. Such is the duty of a butler who manages the household."[470]
  • (Referring to Mey-Rin) "Why, this imbec—that is to say, housemaid. It would seem the problem no longer lies in her eyesight. Why does she fail to realize that there is something clearly wrong with her own brain and not the instructions? Word has it that the public adores silly maids. But I do not think I will ever understand it, and I have no intention of even trying to do so. I myself would like to wring her neck."[471]
  • (Referring to Baldroy) "Why this imbec—rather chef. You should talk about cooking after you have actually cooked something. I believe eighty percent of what you have managed to cook has been charcoal. The other twenty percent was hazardous waste. Save your art for you hairstyle, and cook something edible . . . otherwise . . . I wish for you to become charcoal yourself."[472]
  • (Referring to Finnian) "Why this imbec—this imbecile! How can a gardener be so clumsy? Though the saying goes, 'an idiot and a pair of scissors can both be of use,' giving this useless idiot a pair of scissors is trouble in itself. He refers to something that happened two or three days ago as being 'a while back.' The way his brain can easily cast aside a blunder of that degree . . . I have surpassed anger, and I am, in fact rather impressed."[473]
  • (About Finnian) "I have lived for quite some time, but this is my first encounter with a being from outer space. How does he expect me to respond to his beaming smile?"[473]
  • "I have had enough. In times like these, yes . . . I want to see her. A supple body, flowing black hair. I must hurry . . . to the place where she awaits me . . . to her. I find cats most agreeable. They only say (do) that which is necessary. They are quite adorable. They do not exist in my world. Pets do exist over there, but . . . they leave much to be desired."[474]
  • "I, your 'chessman,' am your 'might,' your 'hands' and 'feet' . . . you alone will decide . . . you yourself will choose . . . and for that, I shall become your 'might.' You said as much . . . 'that day.' I am merely a 'butler.' I will not cross that line. I only faithfully execute what the master orders, and answer what the master asks me. By your order . . . I, your 'chessman' . . . shall become your 'sword.' Now then . . . let us move into check, Master."[475]
  • (To Grell Sutcliff) "From the time . . . my master called me 'Sebastian' . . . that word became my covenant and christened me anew. I have been 'Sebastian' since that day. I vowed as much to the moon, you see?"[476]
  • (While stepping on Grell Sutcliff's face) "I do not enjoy being stepped on . . . but being the one doing the stepping is another story altogether."[477]
  • "Humans are easily tempted. When they are poised on the edge of hellish despair . . . and a spider's thread of salvation presents itself, they will invariably grasp it . . . no matter the manner of human."[478]
  • (To Frances Midford, about Ciel Phantomhive) "The young master has an inordinate talent for games. Consequently, he seems to over-confidently believe that he 'cannot lose.' But at times, it will be necessary for him . . . to carry himself with humility while striving for his goal. Otherwise, he will eventually trip up . . . as the place for which young master aims is not an easy one to reach. Perhaps it is not my place to say this, but . . . I would like you to be an exemplar for my master, Marchioness."[479]
  • (To the other Phantomhive servants) "Why do you three not kowtow and beg Mister Agni for the dirt under his nails? Your lives might gain a little value that way." [480]
  • (To Ciel Phantomhive) "—Oh? What a tiny master this. You have summoned me. That fact will not change for all eternity . . . and the sacrifice that has been made will never return. Make your choice."[481]
  • (To Agni) "England or India, it makes no difference. No matter where or from what era, they are all alike . . . those beings called humans."[482]
  • (To Agni) "Did you say . . . friends? This is my first time hearing that from someone."[483]
  • (To William T. Spears) "I grew weary of indiscriminately devouring souls long ago. The more ravenous I am . . . the more delicious the dinner."[484]
  • (To William T. Spears) "My goodness. That must be quite a chore to handle alone. Still, a large number of souls . . . shall I lend you a hand?"[485]
  • (To Ciel Phantomhive) "As long as there is the contract, I will protect your life. However, if you make a mistake of your own accord, you will possibly suffer a painful experience while alive. You already know that, don't you? Any game becomes boring when it lacks thrills."[486]
  • (To Beast) "Why not forget just for the tonight? Drown in pleasure . . . and breathe sweet poison deep into your lungs."[487]
  • (To Ciel Phantomhive) "You are different from demons who are revolting and possess complex evil intent. Telling lies . . . desperately struggling, kicking down other people. Stealing the stolen, while repeating your reasons over and over. And even so, you aim for the horizon over the hills. That's why humans are interesting."[488]
  • (To Elizabeth Midford, about Grell Sutcliff) "He's just a pervert. I'm afraid it might be contagious, so please step back and stay away from him."[489]
  • (To Ronald Knox) "Young’uns these days are really so feeble. Isn't it kind of old-fashioned to just rely on your Death Scythe?"[490]
  • "How interesting... Humans will drag others down in order to get what they want even in death. What truly insatiable creatures!"[491]
  • (Referring to Ciel Phantomhive) "He turns his back towards the light without hesitation. That figure that charges into the abyss at a dignified pace. How beautiful and foolish."[493]
  • (To Undertaker) "That's where we differ. Exactly because 'death' is such a hopeless and definite 'end' . . . it is beautiful."[494]
  • (About Ciel Phantomhive) "Ah, my master. You're misunderstanding something. What I find most entertaining now . . . is playing the butler in my game with you. It's not behaving like a frenzied beast. However, if that's how you like me . . . I'll act accordingly. Because I'm one hell of a butler."[495]
  • (To Ciel Phantomhive) "The candle burns away to keep its flame alive — not unlike a human being. An inconstant flame that flickers dangerously in a gust of wind and is extinguished all too soon. But, that is what makes them all the more beautiful."[496]
  • "If it's your wish I will follow you everywhere. Even if your throne crumbles and your shiny crown turns to rust. Beside you as you lie, softly down, I will be. Until I hear the words, 'checkmate'."[497]
  • (To Ciel Phantomhive) "For a king to survive it's good for him to be able to skillfully manipulate the other pieces using both the knight and the queen. Beneath the throne the bodies of your pieces will pile up along with your sins. You must not lose."[497]
  • (To Claude Faustus) "Demons have eternal life. We've grown weary of living so long . . . far too long. My young master's presence lends spice to the world we're glutted on."[498]
  • (About Queen Victoria) "As expected of her majesty—even her selfishness is at a royal level." [500]
  • (Thinking about Ciel Phantomhive's orders) "Ohh — dear master. I am afraid you have the wrong impression. My greatest amusement at the moment, you see, is the game I, while bound by my butler livery, am playing against you. So it would not do to act on impulse and behave like a beast. However, if you are particular to my being such a devil . . . I shall act accordingly. For I am a devil of a butler." [501]
  • (To Ciel Phantomhive) "If you disappear, I will be most distressed and worried. Because if my master is not here, I wouldn’t be able to be your butler."[502]
  • (To Edward Midford) "I have seen a great many churches and temples laid to waste in religious wars, all in the name of shaking the faith of the believers. But they were nothing more than symbols. Even if they were decimated, the effect was only temporary. On the contrary, their ruin could even intensify the zeal of the people. The more emotions are oppressed, the more they tend to flare up. That is the kind of creature man is, do you not agree?"[503]
  • "Human hearts are quite irksome, you see. Unlike the flesh, you cannot see or touch a human heart. And not even a devil or god can bind the heart of another in the truest sense of the word."[504]

Trivia

File:Sebastian's grave.png
  • On Sebastian's grave, his epitaph included the following inscriptions: "To The Memory of Sebastian Michaelis. Died March 1889. May ye be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you're dead."[506]
  • In the Victorian era, butlers were called by their last name; Sebastian should technically be called Michaelis by Ciel and Mr. Michaelis by the other servants.[508]
  • Whenever Sebastian was summoned in the manga, he appeared in his true demon form; in the anime, he appears as a crow or raven accompanied by a rain of feathers.[509]
  • Sebastian's last name originates from the Japanese word mikairi meaning "repayment," signifying his contract with Ciel.[510]
  • Sebastian's name is similar to Father Sebastien Michaelis, a French inquistor who wrote a classification of demons of Hell from the demon Berith while exorcising a nun.[511]
  • Yana Toboso's unit to measure her characters is "1 Sebastian."[1]
  • In early drafts, Sebastian's hair was styled with a 7:3 ratio parting.[513] But because Yana Toboso's editorial staff and colleagues did not like the hairstyle, she had to move his parting into the middle.[514]
